Classic canvas is geekier :)

ballistic will hold up longer.Tell that to my 1980-vintage F-2. The canvas is plenty sturdy, and IMO a bit better protection.

ballistic will hold up longer.

From the info I read on their site this is wrong. The ballistic wont hold up longer, but it will keep the same apperance longer. The canvas gets faded and I quote, "like an old pair of jeans" (color).

Both are water resistant and from what I understand the ballistic keeps its factory shape better, while the canvas kinda forms to the gear and your body.

It just depends on what your looking for. Some like a bag to look new in 5yrs while other perfer the aged look after years of use (some even wash the canvas before use to get the aged look).

Hope this helps

By the way thanks Jon, I got that F1x (olive) and love it ;)

It's pretty much up to you. After being in the army, you learn the different materials of bags. Canvas is soft and (sometimes) doesn't hold it's shape, also I think they are talking about colour, which is generally olive green when you see canvas. My National Geographic Medium Backpack is made of canvas on the outside and a rip-stop nylon on the inside.

I'm pretty sure the ballistic black is a more modern nylon weave that is abrasion resistant, so it won't wear holes in your bag as fast. Cordura is a brand of this nylon used in many popular military-style bags. Lowepro bags are constructed of this type of material on the outside.

If you want a colour choice, you need to go canvas. The ballistic nylon ones only come in (dull, camera-bag, heat-absorbing) black. Canvas ones come in black, navy, olive and sand, which will fade over time, but wear like iron. The canvas bags are also lighter than the ballistic nylon, although, to be fair, part of the extra weight on the J-2 is from exterior pocket padded inserts the F-2 doesn't have (and, IMO, doesn't need).
