or stick with Canon? I"m trying to buy a 50mm at Adorama and they don't seem to offer the Canon filters.

Go for the best, get Hoya filter. They are all glass and multi coated. Digital camera are more sensitive to reflected lights between lens elements.

It's 4x as much. There's one called "B+W" that is 5x as much. Can it be 4 to 5x better than the Canon filter?

Hoya!! Recently, I have been getting Tiffen but I rather Hoya. I am going back to Hoya.

I've said this more than once but Modern Photography once did a test on filters and found that they had no effect upon the image. If I remember correctly, they stated that any reputable brand (Hoya,tiffen etc) will not affect your pictures. Now, if you are talking about thickness or shooting into the sun, then the multicoating would be a factor.

I've read several places that the filters offer protection for the lenses. That's the main reason I feel like I need to get one. So, what I think I'm hearing is that the Tiffen and the Canon filters are pretty much the same thing.
