I got a canon IXUS 430 last week but cannot get the software to work reliably. The software is Canon Solutions v17.1 My computer is a PIII 800mhz running Windows 98 SE.

When I try to download the pictures using Zoombrowser, the screen goes back to showing the desktop icons and generally the computer hangs. At this point I press ctl-alt-delete and see that program msgsrv32 is not responding. If I end task and restart zoom browser I can select and download images. After that the PC is unstable and generally cannot reuse ZB to download any images.

I have tried reinstalling, editing the registry, deleting and reinstall the u
sb drivers etc. Nothing seems to fix the problem.

I have used the freeware canoncam2pc and this works but is a little restrictive. Windows Imaging also works but I do not know how to save JPG imgaes with this software.

Any ideas? Am I alone with this problem? Is this version faulty? Must I use a card reader?

Save yourself a lot of trouble and buy a cardreader  .

I've been on this forum for a while and I can't recall ever seen a solution for Win98 related problems like these.

Thanks for the reply.

Surely these problems are solvable! Are they restricted to WIN 98?.

If I use a card reader do I get all the infomation about the photo downloaded? Can I browse thumbnails to select which to download?

If other software works to download in win 98 why can't Canons?

Off course the problem is solvable, the problem is that solving it isn't easy in Win98 and I could probably solve it when I was sitting behind your screen. Solving it by trial and error through this forum is virtually impossible.

If I use a card reader do I get all the infomation about the photo downloaded? Can I browse thumbnails to select which to download? The answer is simple: yes, you can. In your explorer you will see the card reader as an extra disk and it will behave as such.

If other software works to download in win 98 why can't Canons?

Canon software will also work in Win98, but when something goes wrong in the set-up it's difficult to find out what's wrong. I've used the software both in Win98, WinME and now in XP-Pro without any problems, but I'm probably just lucky   .
