For those of you who have been waiting for the Canon Fall Rebates, they are on the way. To be honest I forgot about my rebates. I got an email near the end of February updating the progress of the rebates. I dug up that email today and clicked on the supplied link and my checks were sent out 4-7-04. FYI

Great - I checked mine earlier this week, and it was no change from the original status 'in the final stages...' :? I'll have to check mine when I get home. :)

I totally forget about these. Of course I totally forget to send them in, too, and sent them on the very last day possible. When did you mail your?

And I have yet to receive an email. Should I be worried about this yet?

I mailed mine in mid-January

And I have yet to receive an email. Should I be worried about this yet?

I would be.

Whoa, $500. I thought I was excessive with $300.

Yeah. We went a little crazy there. In fact, the rebate would have been more except they had a limit of only one of each kind of lens...I actually bought two of the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS lenses during that period...a long story. That would've been another $150 based on the terms of the rebate program, but I could only claim one of them. I also bought two other lenses that didn't qualify at all. I also had another lens that I bought just a week or two before the program began. Who knew?

It was a very expensive couple months, but very satisfying.

Why don't they just make the list price the same as what you get after the rebate, it's a pretty stupid way of sucking people into buying a product, I can't understand why people think it's a good deal.

Wow lets buy this lens and in a couple of months time we will give you 100 dollars back, during that time your money will have been sitting in our bank account earning interest, thank you mr customer for the free no interest loan. It's crazy.

For companies that import a lot of goods made overseas, the ever-changing exchange rate is a real problem, when trying to price goods here. The recent devaulation of the yen has made the price we pay here for goods made in Japan continue to plunge.

But, next month, quarter, or year (who knows?) the yen may bottom out, and US prices will start to climb. For some items, that has already started happening. Japanese Amateur Radio makers have already informed dealers that they are raising prices on gear this summer.

Now, if you were selling stuff here, based on a varying exchange rate like that, would you:

a) give customer rebates, so that retailers and distributors are not left 'holding the bag' with older, costlier stock when the retail price drops.

OR

b) attempt to refund all your distribution channels for price variations, and then back-charge them when prices go up.

Also, if you drop retail prices when the exchange rate is favorable, rather than giving rebates to customers, then you are forced to raise prices (rather than just not renew the rebates) when the exchange rate swings the other way.

Auto companies are still giving rebates (although it's been calming down a bit), mainly because it's become a 'sign and drive' gimmick. The rebate is typically applied to up-front payments that are normally due at signing, or used to 'upgrade' the purchase, by applying it to options that should have been on the base model in the first place (four-wheel disc brakes, etc.)

In NZ the prices for imported items varies depending on the exchange rate. Sometimes the importer will wear the difference sometimes they will pass it on. As the USD has been dropping like a stone recently loads of items that are purchased in USD have also dropped as the NZD is going up in value.

I'm glade we don't have this type of retailing here, it gives you a false indication of a products worth.

The Canon Fall Rebates Are On The Way

Not for me, it seems. They have no record of having received my rebate submission.

The rebate company is asking me to re-submit, but of course I sent in the UPC labels like they asked and it doesn't look like I made copies of anything. I might have made copies but I don't even remember if I did, and they're not where I'd keep them anyway. Now I have to check with the post office to see if it was delivered. I actually have the receipt from the post office, amazingly enough.

So I'm out $180 it seems. :(

That's it, from now on I'm a Nikon guy!

Bummer!

Stay away from the N***n stuff. You'll get warts.

I qualified for another $50.00 today on the current rebate program. Picked up a 16-35 f/2.8L. Now I can rest. I have f/2.8 from 16mm up to 200mm. I'm about to run out of excuses for the rotten pictures I take.

Somebody help me.

Picked up a 16-35 f/2.8L.

I think I'm going to start collecting model trains so I can afford L in the future. This rebate thing sure isn't working.

The Web site says mine were mailed - but if I add up what the Web site says I will be short. I will wait until they arrive to see how much I actually get. :?

Looks like the USPS screwed me. The letter was in Miami on Feb 28 but for some reason it wasn't delivered until March 1st at 6:17 AM. I can't really understand why this would be.
