light meter

Just beginning. Asked questions about studio lighting and I appreciate your help.

Yesterday it was suggested that I obtain a light meter. My purpose is to eventually develop some expertise at taking studio portraits and the like. Do not intend to open a business, just a hobby.

Any suggestions for light meters to work with a digital camera and a modest lighting package? I see Gossen has them. I see luna pro for sale on ebay all the time for what seems to be a modest price.

I currently have the sony dsc S70. It allows for apeture or shutter priority. It does not seem to allow me to set both based on the readings my new light meter will suggest. I am guessing that the meter will give me a suggested setting, I will lock the fstop, but the light meter in the camera will set the shutter speed on the camera based on setup before the flash system is fired. The two Umbrellas and strobes would seem to put much more light on the subject that the camera's light meter would suggest.

Am I right? I will have both the meter and the lights in just a few days, I am anticipating some problems. The most obvious, is that sony's external flash connection will not connect to anything but a sony flash. A little selfish I think. Anyway, I will be bouncing the internal flash away from the subject is such a way as to fire the strobes.


Any thoughts on this?
