I read that applying a sticky label to your CD could cause deterioration. Is this true?
If so, should I just use a sharpie and write on my discs?

See CLIR PUB121 (Care and Handling of CDs and DVDs):

In a nutshell, applying labels or writing directly on CDs and DVDs with solvent-based inks may cause accelerated deterioration. I store all of my archive DVDs in acid-free sleeves in an acid-free archival binder (http://www.unikeep.com/Products/products_vcb.html) and label each disc with a sharpie around the inner edge of the spindle. I only write on the clear plastic.
