Hawk Owl lives not on mouse alone. Here it gets ready to dig into a little P&J sandwich. OK, I have no idea what's between the crust but someone decided to sacrifice a sandwich and the Hawk Owl flew down to to inspect it.

"OK, what low-life did this?!!?" it seems to be thinking. Actually, James Duncan, an accomplished orthinologist specializing in owls has this to say: "mock attacks on inanimate objects are important to the development of hunting skills in young owls. Young [owls] that are well fed play more frequently."

That looks more like a Twinkie and in that case, I wonder if he'd share? :D

Nice shot. I have raised several Red Tail nest jumpers and several crows. And I can tell you this, everything likes peanut butter. ;)

Thanks morehtml. I'm not a fan of the bread either but happened to be there and captured the interesting behaviour. I always look for opportunities to photograph wildlife subjects doing some unusal things.

While I'm sure National Geographic editor Moran was not referring to this type of shot, the spirit of what was said is echoed in what I was after in taking the above image of the Northern Hawk Owl.

"......there are no perfect shots. Instead, she (Kathy Moran, senior editor of NG) asks, "What is the surprise in this image? What is the behavior no one has ever seen before? And to have it be a killer shot, it has to be something nobody's ever shot before or haven't shot quite as well."

Thanks Canonloader. Hey, if that were a Twinkie I don't think the Hawk Owl would have had the chance to play with it.....hmmmmmm....yummy.....oh did I just eat YOUR Twinkie?

Hmmmmmm.....interesting info. Peanut Butter. Really??

Peanut Butter. Really??
A little background. I grew up on a farm and loved all birds right from the start. At 14, I got a baby crow that fell out of the nest and raised him as a pet. The next year, I found a baby Red Tail under a nest tree, took it home and raised it. The crow helped. They were buddies from the start. Many times I have sat on the porch, eating a peanut butter sandwich and the crow and red tail right there helping me eat it.

Both the crow and red tail also ate rabbits and any other road kill my dad would find on the way home, and dog food. All this may sound strange, but it was normal for me. :)

Thanks Snowyowl13.

Great capture!!

Thanks Phil.

Beautiful shot, sandwich and all

Thanks calicokat. The owl actually dropped the bread in the snow. Then it turned its head kind of sideways so its eyes could see it. The expression was to cute.
