and one more typical shot....of her flying away from me!

She then flew and landed on a beautiful old fence post that would have been a perfect perch, but impossible to get near.

I know how you feel!
i think too many people look at pictures and don't bother commenting, pitty really as people post to get help, as well as showing off their skills.
I really like 1, i think the colours are really nice, you did well to get that shot, everytiem i try to shoot them they fly off :(

Hey Bob, it doesnt take long now to get bumped off the front page, and I think the Audience is getting harder to impress ;). Our Kestrels are not back yet..Not that they let me get close enought to see color on the pic anyway. Nicely done on these, They sure are a colorful raptor.
Edit: I still think that with the increase in traffic here we might need a double coloumn page style on this forum, that way twice as many posts per page, give them time to be viewed. Just my 2 cents worth of hot air.

You beat me to the punch Bob. I saw your post this morning after I made a couple of additions to mine (and no responses there either! :)). But for some reason, POTN would not upload my response to the Kestrel thread. (Either it was POTN or my ISP suddenly went south on me!) So I figured I'd respond when I got home from work.
I've always been partial to Kestrels since way back in the 70s. My wife and I rescued one outside the apartment building we were living in at the time. We took it to a wildlife sanctuary where it was rehabilitated. I love to be able to see one let alone get close enough to photograph one.
Nice image and good color, Bob. And hey, I don't know about you but I am getting used to seeing the southbound end of northbound birds!;)

Very good shots indeed. This is what makes birding fun. Trying to get closer and closer to get the perfect shot. ;-)

Nice shot of a skittish bird! Yes, I usually get them on a wire too, so disappointing.

Good catch Bob. This is a difficult bird to capture for several different reasons. I really like the first pic.

Bob, love your shots! I was at the refuge today and a kestrel flew from one boundary sign to another--three times-as I drove toward it. Then off to an out of reach tree. They are very hard to shoot. Your subject is a beauty, that's for sure!
