I want to buy a spare battery for the 300D.The local epay has plenty of sellers but i'm wondering why some BP511's are listed as suiting G3,G5, D30 etc while others suit only 10D,300D etc?
Is it only to do with the Mah rating or is there actually a shape difference?

They're all the same. Don't try to be cheap, because I've heard about the cheap ones malfunctioning and damaging the camera.

Any name brand should be fine.. the ones that are a gamble are the no names availble for $10.00 or so on Ebay etc..
They CAN work,. and often do... but as I say they are a gamble as sometimes they do not work.
Expect to spend $20.00 - $35.00 for a reliable namebrand like Lenmar, PowerEx or Digipower.

Sometimes on eBay the sellers will list with different titles just to get hits on the searches.
Somewhere in Canon literature it says the warranty is void if the damage comes from using a non-Canon battery. I know I read it when I got one of my cameras, but I went back to look for it recently and I couldn't find it.

Unless you told them how would Canon EVER know that damaged was caused by a non canon battery?

I have used the Hahnel batteries available in the UK at Young's Camera and other places and no ill effects almost one year on. It is even 1400 mAH too! Cost, £20ish.

Well, if you left the non-Canon battery in the camera when it went to the service center, or if there is residue in the camera from an explosion they may be able to identify it.

That's why you take it out before sending it! LOL!

Obviously, but sometimes you just have to point these things out so someone doesn't find out the hard way...

That was the idea...LOL! It comes with a Canon BP-511, and worst case scenario, take of fBig ed, stick in the Cnaon BP-511 and send it, if needed.

Sometimes urban legends run rampant on the internet.
I see lots of posts on different forums that say "I've heard that the cheap batteries could explode or damage the camera, blah blah blah..."
I would like to challenge the folks here to tell us their PERSONAL "Camera Battery Explotion or Damage" story.
I PERSONALLY bought 2 batteries off ebay for $24 and they work as well as the Canon supplied battery and the $79 (yeah I know sucker..) battery I bought at the store with the camera.
So have you had to send your camera to be repaired because of a battery failure?
Has anyone here PERSONALLY had Canon void their warranty because of a non-Canon battery?

I have had a half dozen of these batteries - Canon brand, Lenmar, Maha and no name and I have to say the 1300 mAh $11.99 no names are by far the most impressive I have used so far! Incredibly long lasting per charge.
I used to think that if you pay more or go with a name brand, they will last longer but that doesn't seem to be the case. Any battery can die at anytime so my advice is buy some of the cheap ones if you are dealing with a reputable co. and they come with a 1 yr. warranty. Any life you get after that is a bonus.

Another eg of rip-off Britian:
In the UK, Canon 511s are around 55 pounds, which at the current exchange rate, is nearly $100 US.
For the info of UK members:
In the UK, UNIROSS are now one of the biggest and trusted manufacturers of rechargable batteries and have now started to sell 511 types. I have seen them on several UK interent supply sites for under 20 pounds. Not bad for trusted brand.

I never call it exchange rate, other than for those that have never heard me call it what I usually call it, the extortion rate.
BTW, FWIW, I got a Hahnel HL-511 at Youngs Camera in Kings Lynn, Norfolk for £30-odd I recon. It has worked flawlessly and is higher MaH than the Canon one, and a lot cheaper!

I agree. I bought a couple of $11.99 batteries for my 10D and they work great. In fact, here's the link:
Woops, sorry, $14.99....
