i hate it. all those animated smilies are annyoing.
Its NOT actually a chat - its called a shoutbox. You basically leave messages in it.

Personally i think its better to use it in a "landscape" format at the top or bottom of the page.

PS. You can also get a phpbb integrated shoutbox - so users dont have to put a name in etc. It also means non-registered users cant use it until they log in :wink:

you would be surprised how many people will wander by and fill it with crap
