It seems nuts, but since getting the trouble plagued new system I have yet to use it to do anything "new" (other than some tests etc.. I guess this is what happens when you move and turn your life upside down)
Browsed through the keepers from last Springs Osprey shoot and found a few more that could stand up to printing.
Here's the first;

Its' the most recent addition to this gallery;

This is only a slight crop, so I have lots of detail for print I was happy to see.

Hm.. I may have color issues again.. let me know what you think of the color cast on your monitor,.?
**Uh Ohh.. just heard a huge roar of thunder and I have no UPS yet!**
I'm signing off and going to the office supply store! :shock:

Well I'm on a spyder calibrated 24" and the color looks pretty good. I would play with making it slightly cooler and the fish looks slightly too green for my eye but that's really a judgement call for you on both. Great action shot BTW

Thanks for that, this is actually good news. With Spyder calibration on, it looks a little warm to me, but with calibration off, it looks too cool with more green..
Since I can't actually calibrate in my OS, I need to import the calibration so it's hard to gauge if I got things right.

The shot is excellent, the color looks very good here, but I see all kinds of compression artifacts all around the bird. I have a M$ mouse with a magnifier built in and I can see them real good with that on.

Absolutely Beautiful CDS! (I'm so glad I stopped in :) ). And the color looks great (viewing it on a calibratred mac) to me as well.

Thanks, I think I shrunk it too much. I used " 7" in PSCS, I think I need to use 9 or 10 (out of 12)

Great shot! I know what you mean about a move turning your life upside down. I was transferred up here to Alaska, My dream assingment, only to find myself really overwhelmed by the move and by this place in general! I got here in October and I am just now starting to find the time to get out and with that I am just barely starting to learn my way around. Hopefully it picks up quick for both of us!

CDS - A few questions:
What is your strategy to find and photograph birds like this?
What do you focus on when looking for a spot to sit?
Do you use a blind?
Is there a best time of day?
Are you just lucky or do you wait for hours?
What lens do you prefer?
I have a few areas that have Ospreys, Eagles and other Raptures, but when I go there, it never works out for me.
I really appreciate any insight. I've really been working hard to shoot Raptures and I've done a lot of sitting..... watching them.
I'm going to the pet store to buy some mice. :)

As a photo of a Osprey with a meal it is as a perfect shot as one will see.
The colors look good on my calibrated 24" as well. What I do seem to notice is the head area looks over sharpened just a tad. But I learned a long time ago that a picture displayed here at 74 KB is not the same as a uncompressed file at home.

First, please don't go to the pet store to get mice :(
Baiting Raptors is a bad idea for the birds involved, and is illegal in many areas.
I do not use a blind, but I will use natural cover such as bushes etc.. I was pretty well tucked in with the mosquitos for this series, but that just got me closer,
the main trick is to find out where they go and where they are active.
A lot more info can be found in this thread;
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=42510
Which is just one of many excellent tutorials/discussions that can be found in the sticky/FAQ threads in the forums. This is one of the instructional threads in "Talk About Photography" forum.
Mostly though, I just wait for hours. :)
Again, I want to stress to you to please not get started by baiting the birds. As nature photographers we need to be protecteive of our subjects, and cuase no harm or impact on them or there environment.
[B]getting shots by using Mice is the path to the dark side, and once you start down that path you can never return.....[/benkenobivoce-off]

Thanks guys,
I do have problems re: sharpening and halos, and thanks for pointing it out. I still do not have a decent method for how to deal with what I upload. The full size and prints look good though. Maybe I should just drop the idea of tweaking the resizes all together...

Very nice angle, position on the bird, details, and the colors look fine to me. Nice movement in the wings as well. All comes together very nicely.
