I posted this over in nature and didn't get a comment or feedback. Thoughts?

It's a pretty picture.

There is absolutely no symetry in this photo which I like, however, the bench leaves me looking for symetry. Maybe if the rear line of the bench were more level... Maybe if the bench were just a bit to the right... Maybe if the rock wall were centered more...

Then again, perhaps all of these "near" symetries should be pushed further out. It would keep me from seeing the near miss on the symetry.

I find the composition to be too centered. Also, it seems that it's the tree that captures my attention, yet it's not a spectacular tree in any way. There isn't a lot of colors in the picture. I think that a B&W image would be more suited for this picture, should you consider keeping it.

It seems like a nice location, but the picture doesn't seem to be doing it justice... You could may be try a shot from a higher perspective?

Just my $0.02. Sorry if it's not more positive, but I'm being honest with what I think ;)

Keep that shutter moving!

Aside from the compositional comments above, the first thing that caught my eye was the terrible purple fringing in the top right corner, and the color shift to the top left.

Was this taken on the kit lens? I'm not trying to be harsh. I'm just curious because I can really see lots of lens defficiencies here.

sigma 10-20, must be a piece of crap...

That lens is not supposed to be a bad one. other than complaints about Sigma QC, causing distortion on the sides of some copies, and complaints about poor lens cap design, I don't see many complaints about its optical quality. Its supposed to be pretty good, in fact.

You were shooting into the sun, although it was obscurred by the tree, and that is one of the harshest conditions for any lens, so it can't be totally blamed on the lens itself.

Have a look here for a good review of it:

I also think a lot of it is perception. I had people say they liked it - that normally doesn't micro analyze things like we tend to do - and some say they didn't. I know shooting into the sun isn't the best thing to do but I had limited time and it was a quick, not-so-thought-out capture. Here's a couple more captures with the same lens that were a little more well-received:

Hey Mr Tiles, I don't think there is anything to lead my eye around the picture. My eye tends to sit on the big blob of a seat and see the bright bit of green on the left. Perhaps taking some more time to think about the picture and moving your feet could have improved it. Most of the fun in photography is walking and making a picture. Hope this helps.

The second two you have posted meanwhile are fabulous, the B&W one perfectly draws my eye from the pier into the group of trees, I love it! :D

thx, I just wanted to make sure the lens wasn't crap. I take more junk shots than those that are keepers...beauty of digital though!

and a side note, I plan on reshooting that same bench/tree from a different perspective to see if I can do better. the c&c has been much appreciated!

OK Mr. Tiles. Please don't take my posts as criticism. I really think your problem is over exposure. I notice from the exif data that the camera was set to pattern mode. I believe if you dial down the exposure to about -2/3, you might come away with some really neat images there. I for one do like the composition. the first one feels good to me, because it imparts a feeling of tranquility. The second one has the fence and the path that leads me to the tree. Although the tree is somewhat overpowering. As for the B/W, well, I'm very biased towards it, as I am really liking B/Ws these days. I rally like this one.

Give the exposure compensation a try. With that 10mm focal length, I think you could really get some real nice landscapes. Good Luck.
