Waiting at the rodeo for his dad to compete. What can I do to make this kind of shot better? C&C please.

Lighting is the biggest problem I see. You could have use exposure compensation to expose his face more. Problem is you might blow out the areas that aren't in shadow. The best thing would have been to shoot his in the shade or with his face fully sunlit. Fill flash would have helped but I hate to use that with animals or kids.
