View Full Version : Viewing & Working with 16 bit TIFF files in Photoshop CS

I am very new to Photoshop CS (just got it last week). I seem to be able to work with 8 bit TIFF files but can't seem to get 16 bit files to work. I have converted them from raw files using both the file viewer and C1-Rebel but the results are the same. When viewed in Photoshop CS they are extremely dark with only a hint of an image. I know this is a rank beginner's question but I am a rank beginner so . . . how do I get the 16 bit files to appear normally so I can work on them?
Any hints will be most gratefully received. (Boy do I have a long way to go on the learning curve)

In FVU, click on File from the dropdown menu and select Preferences.... In the Preferences window, clcik on the Raw Image Processing Setting and uncheck "Linear". Then click OK to save the change.
Sorry, can't help you with C1-Rebel.
You can also use the raw converter that's built into PSCS without any problems.

This seems very strange. If it looks good in Capture1 then it should look almost the same in PS. There should be no drastic differences between 8- and 16-bit TIFFs.
Perhaps you have to go through your color spaces. (Though it doesn't explain the difference between 8- and 16-bit.)
In C1, under Workflow, choose Show Color Management Settings.
I have camera Product & Profile set to Canon 10D.
Output Destination is AdobeRGB
Web is sRGB, but I never output to web.
Proof is my printer, Epson 1280.
Monitor is my monitor, Dell something but I profiled it with Adoba Gamma.
Unlock Monitor is checked.
Under the Develop tab I choose TIFF 16-bit, and Color Management Workflow is set to Convert To Destination.
In PS CS I default to AdobeRGB, but it will complain if a picture comes in any other way, and I always use whatever the image was tagged with.
I then work in AdobeRGB, check gamut and proof, and Image... Mode... Convert to sRGB then save as JPG for the web. For prints I convert to Epson 1280. I always save the original TIFF in AdobeRGB.

Well, I discovered there is no problem with C1-Rebel. The problem turned out to be with file viewer and that was fixed after I unchecked linear output as suggested by another poster. So I appear to be past that hurdle. I do thank you for the help.

Unchecking linear did the trick. Thanks so much for the help. Boy do I need a lot of work.
