The spider was TINY!!
I assume it just hatched as I seen him floating down right in front of my face then he tried to spool out another parachute.

Wow, very nice shots. Are all of those shot freehand?
Yes, all freehand.
I dont like to lug my tripod around with my while hiking.
I need to find a pack mule... err girlfriend who likes to hike

This lens has decent AF.
Not the greatest but again not bad for $200

These little black birds are fast and tiny.
I was able to AF on him DURING flight THROUGH foxtails.
I got skills but I need to give respect to the lens also.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t300/Uhland/IMG_2476.jpg

This one I as able to track him across a pond and get 5 or 6 shots off.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t300/Uhland/IMG_2586.jpg

I was also able to track onto Carpenter bees in flight.
Smaller than the sensor square. It didnt lock on every time but I was pretty amazed it worked at all with how quick they move

The ONLY downside to this lens is there tends to be some purple fringing. If you look up at the woodpecker shot you can see it.
Nothing that has ever ruined any shot I took tho.

Uhland

and here it is cropped down a bit for aesthetics

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t300/Uhland/IMG_2965-1.jpg

The color is pretty decent too.
The cherry blossoms above. Zero saturation on that, nada, zilch.
Thats full frame of the photo.

Just a FYI.
I might be purchasing the 100-400L today.
Saved up enough for it. If that works out well in a few weeks or so this lens might be up for sale. I hate keeping things around if I dont use them.

me too in a dilemna ... thinking between this tamron and sigma lens 70-300 mm in low-budget range

Laserheart
31st of August 2007 (Fri), 20:41
Well, I broke down and bought the Sigma. When I used it for a while, I found the controls to be very sluggish, and sometimes it would get stuck in Macro mode which was very frustrating (I later found out that the focus ring had to be completely retracted before you could flick the switch.).

I took it back, and got the Tamron, which was slightly cheaper.

I find the Tamron to be better built (focus and zoom rings don't seem as loose), and the pictures seem very comparable if not better than the Sigma.

It has a bigger lens, so my UV filter doesn't use it, but I was thinking that the size of the lens may allow more light into the camera?

Here is it.

They are pretty much the same lens.
The best way to make a choice is ask yourself this...

Will you keep this lens for a long time or upgrade in a year or so?

Keep = Tamron

Upgrade = Sigma

Reason why.

Tamron has a VERY long warranty compared to the Sigma.
Sigma is more well know/popular/in demand so it holds a slightly higher resale value.

You wont go wrong with either one.
But thats honestly the two biggest differences.

Laserheart
3rd of September 2007 (Mon), 23:54
I'm going to keep the Tamron.

I do appreciate the comments, and the suggestions.

The warranty for both lenses is basically the same (one has a 6 year warranty, and the other has a 5 year warranty), so that was not really a deciding factor.

The few reviews I have searched high and low to find pretty much all mention very minor differences between the two, but it seems that the Tamron has a slight edge from my perspective.

Usually, when purchasing products, things don't get so close as a decision this was to make...

Now, I have a problem... I need to find budget wide angle and macro lenses... any suggestions?

Film face, sure it will. Good little lens in it's price class. After this or the Sigma version it's off to the bank! It should work like a charm on the XTi,just use manual mode as you won't have to wait for focus to hunt around for any length of time. Have fun.

I got my lens yesterday, and I'm pleasantly surprised! The lens' build quality is pretty good (it seems to be on par with my other Tamron Lens -- see sig).

It took me a little bit to get used to the "special" focus areas for macro mode and remembering to flip the macro switch back to "normal" to get out of them.

The autofocus is, as everyone says, slow ... and it hunts quite a bit in low light. I've got no problems manual focusing though, as I'll be using this mostly for stuff that isn't moving real fast (if at all!)

I took some sample images of random stuff around my apartment, and they all turned out quite sharp at 70, 200, and 300mm ... chromatic aberration did become apparent in some of my 300mm shots though :-/

I'm planning on taking this lens out tonight possibly to take some photos of more interesting stuff with it around campus ... I'll post some samples soon thereafter!

Charles Richards
12th of September 2007 (Wed), 20:43
Well here are a few of my test photos with this lens. I've not post processed these at all.

(Click the photo to go to my photo gallery for the fullsize)

Chromatic Aberration is a problem with this lens under certain light (mostly bright / high contrast light situations is where I experienced it ... Examples:

http://images.charlesrichards.net/d/52462-2/IMG_0899.jpg (http://images.charlesrichards.net/v/photography/unsorted/IMG_0899.jpg.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=3)

http://images.charlesrichards.net/d/52472-2/IMG_0849.jpg (http://images.charlesrichards.net/v/photography/unsorted/IMG_0849.jpg.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=3)

I don't mind this too much, as I've had no problems fixing this in lightroom.

I didn't have this problem all the time though -- I took this photo at about 200mm IIRC, and had no problems with sharpness or CA.

http://images.charlesrichards.net/d/52467-2/IMG_0905.jpg (http://images.charlesrichards.net/v/photography/unsorted/IMG_0905.jpg.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=3)

This lens has excellent "macro" capability (although I suck at hand-holding this lens @ 300mm) ... I'll have to take out my tripod and do some more test shots.

http://images.charlesrichards.net/d/52457-2/IMG_0954.jpg (http://images.charlesrichards.net/v/photography/flowers/IMG_0954.jpg.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=3)

http://images.charlesrichards.net/d/52452-2/IMG_0893.jpg (http://images.charlesrichards.net/v/photography/flowers/IMG_0893.jpg.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=3)

Lastly, here's a couple I post-processed because I love black and white photos:

http://images.charlesrichards.net/d/52517-7/IMG_0899.jpg

http://images.charlesrichards.net/d/52481-9/IMG_0919.jpg

All in all, I'm very satisfied with this lens. I got the lens, a tamrac case, and a UV filter for $230 from b&h photo. For the price, I'm very satisfied -- images are sharp, and with the right post processing (to remove CA, usually, can be very high quality.)

I hope these last couple posts will be helpful for anyone else who is considering this lens as a starter telephoto lens!

I haven't tried ... but I'd guess probably not so well. It's got pretty slow auto-focus, and if you don't have *really* good light, it'll hunt for the focus subject quite a bit.

Maybe I'll take it to a football or basketball game sometime soon :D

I have owned this lens for about 6 months and has been threw many actuation's and now it seems like the focus is slowing down? When I first received it the focus was much faster at ANY zoom point. I don't know if its the camera or the lens? This images were taken at last months drift event. The first one is a complete stand still, and it's still not that sharp after focusing for several seconds. The second is the sharpest motion I have gotten since the lens. I mainly take pictures of either drifting or a rolling shot (lots of motion images). I cannot yet determine if the cause is the camera being "dirty" or the lens it self, but it definitely has gotten slower!

I'm also having a hard time choosing between Tamron AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di LD Macro or Sigma AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro. They both have good reach but I don't know which one is better at the long end because quality means more to me. If the autofocus is slow I might want to get the Sigma though I've heard that it gets soft at the long end. I've also thought about Tamron AF 55-200mm F4-5.6 Di II LD macro but I think it will be too short. I'm looking for a lens that could do well on a horse sport event or let me zoom enough to capture a roe or some wildlife character without paying thousands. I am new to buying extra lenses so be gentle with me :D I can't tell bad lens from a good one.
Oh and I just want to be sure. Is the Tamron compatible with Canon 450D/Rebel XSi? :D

Im in the same boat as you my friend. Ive heard good things about the sigma and the tamron and bad things about both like soft focusing and CA. I dont have a dslr yet but i plan on getting a Rebel XS and plan on getting tele-zoom lense and a nifty-fifty.

btw yes it is compatible with a Rebel XSi

My tammy 70-300 sh!t the bed about a month or so ago...blades stuck closed in it. I am not going to pay to have it fixed because I didn't pay that much for it.

Ok well that's all clear now :D Thanks! I still haven't decided which one to choose. I know they aren't both exellent and the quality isn't brilliant but I think for a start they are OK to guide me to my next buy. But I want the one which could ''last'' longer so I wouldn't have to buy a new one in 2 months because I'm sick of the crappy *sorry* quality or slow autofocus. I don't know what to do.. I've researched everywhere, and just when it seems like I have made up my mind I find amazing photos and people who say that the other one is better, actually, so I'm all messed up again..
If you mean Canon EF 50mm f1.8 as the nifty-fifty then I checked it out too because it is amazingly cheap and it has a great aperture but I decided to buy it later sometimes because right now I need a zoom one more than the 50.

I recently got this lens, along with my first ever DSLR, the XSi. I was planning on buying the EF-s 55-250 first, but this was on a discount with the XSi, so I took the Tamron. I really enjoy doing macro photography with this lens. My newbie opinion is that it's a nice low-budget lens. Some pics (I'm a total beginner so excuse the low quality) :

It has a lot of CA though, which is evident on this pic of nuthatch (bigger res on my flickr):
