A little back ground first.

My mother-in-law engaged an artist to convert a photograph I took of our son and her into a painting. No cost was agreed up front and she advised the artist to cut her out of the picture as she only wanted our son in the painting.

Well after 6 months it's ready and was delivered yesterday. The artist charged her $1,000 for the work which was wrong and had both people, not to mention the fact that it was a poor representation as well. My mum in law was very upset yesterday and felt she had just blown away the money.

But that's not the "gold" part of the story.

The artist's explaination of how she establishes the fee for work is an absolute cracker......I burst out laughing when I heard the story which did lighten up the mood a little.

Anyway the artist has a crystal on a string that she hangs over the finished artwork and based on how it moves over the inage and where it wants to settle tells her if it's going to be $800 or $1000 or $1200!!!!

Can you believe that!!!

Now more debates on what to charge just get your crystal and hang it over the image and then send the account.

Cheers
Andrew

Get me one of those crystals where the image price starts at $800!

I think the POTN shop should start stocking them!

I think the POTN shop should start stocking them! Please send me one ASAP. Then I can hold it over the monitor, with POTN displayed, & see how much I should pay for it? :D ...and had both people, not to mention the fact that it was a poor representation as well. Good luck with that Space Cadet! Tell your grandmother to ask to borrow the crystal. Hold it over the painting & tell the "Artist" that it's only worth $4.95? :D

It's all bad I know

Made worse by the artist being a good friends best friend which makes it almost impossible to challange. The art work is already stowed away and has begun gathering dust.....It's a shame really as mum in law was so excited about giving us the gift.

wrxflame,
Can you post the original picture so we can see it.
Sorry to hear about that. When I do something like that I always get client approval at various steps along the way. This way they can see how it is progressing and then they can not claim they are surprised at the final product.
I have seen those crystals you speak about. They are usually at the bottom of urinals.:)

This is an excellent idea. I know commercial photographers who get the art director or client rep to sign approvals on Polaroid test shots before making the final images when doing high budget studio shoots.

Here is a few minutes work. If I had the large image I could do more with it.
The next step would be to use an oil painting technique that I learned from this forum. If I have time I will do a sample and post it for you.
ROFL, I just noticed that I forget the red on the bottom right.

Wait a moment while I get my crystal........................................... ......it says a glass of coiniac if you are ever in the states.:)
