I think he means because POTN is free. What he fails to realize is that this site isn't endorsed by Canon at all, so it has nothing to do with brand and everything to do with a generous individual site owner.

I find this amusing. From http://www.nikonians.org/html/about/index.html:
We wish to present this community as a humble tribute to:
* The Nikon brand that has given us and so many others so much joy in photography
.
* The pioneering efforts of all those anonymous engineers who have made, and continue to make extraordinary advances possible within photography
.
* The generous Nikon corporate loyalty to all the users world wide, clearly manifested through the possibility to use nearly any Nikkor® lens on any Nikon camera ever made.
Shouldn't it be Sonyonians then?
I don't mind a site charging, but here's what irks me:
New members on trial memberships are expected to become contributing paying members if and as soon as they happen to like this community and appreciate the resource it is for their enjoyment and progress as photographers.
So they're basically forcing people that enjoy the site to subscribe.
Then there's this from http://www.nikonians.org/jobs.html:
We are a not for profit community
Hmm. Right.
These guys are getting filthy rich. I wish I had thought of it. Sad part is all that money they pull in, and they don't even have an 800 number.

I think that Pekka should allow people to voluntarily donate to a PayPal account to help offset the cost of running the site. No pressure to do so, just a means if a member decided they wanted to.

What frequently happens is that once a "free" site starts to charge for premium
membership, they lose quite a lot of their members.
That's precisely why my car site doesn't ask for payment either.
What can a site seriously offer to justify the costs really? picture gallery space? whopee...plenty of free ones out there...and the pro ones, many people have already. What you will probably see is that many former Nikonians will be flooding all the other forums that they already frequent already.
Thank you for making this site free ;)

Love you in that caring 'your-head-is-in-my-crosshairs-and-I'm-not-talking-about-my-camera' sorta way. :)

No, they wanted to kick him out for not owning Nikon gear.
I have a Nikon shoulder strap I found so I guess I could join but I'm too proud to do anything with it. Thought about using it for my camping gear or something like that but really didn't want to be associated with that word. Not like I really care, a camera is a camera, but I love that Nikon users can behave this badly. Makes me giggle... Tee-hee.
As for charging, no big deal there, but the line stating you should subscribe to a paid membership after awhile is bogus. I can only guess what this site costs to run monthly but I would (and have) rather donate more to a completely free site than subscribe to a paid site for less.

I hate to burst your bubbles but sites like these do cost money to run and even worse.... require time to maintain. I know my time is definitely worth more than simple hosting costs. I maintain several enthusiast sites and while we have sponsors that pay for hosting, staying on top of maintenance is a friggin headache I'd rather not have. I say more power to them if they can attract subscribers.

If you buy anything from the POTN store, you can donate, or just donate. I like to buy stuff. I'm thinking about a vest next. But it is time to donate again.
Thanks for the great site! The most fun I've had since graduating college.

It's not about the subscription itself but the philosophy they seem to project. "If you don't pay us soon after joining, we'll boot you. We love you. But only if you buy our love."
