Did a shoot at a hill climb today and took a few driver close-up shots using my 300. For those that want to see just how sharp this lens is look at the 100% crop.
Taken with my 1D, 1/320, F10, ISO200. Don't forget this is a 4mp camera. Nothing done other than what C1 processed and of course, the crop.

And the crop

This isn't so much a lens, more a way of life.

Sweet. The wrinkles in the decals. The hairy eyebrows. Very nice. Now perk those babies with some white balance to remove the cloudy-day haze and you're set!

It looks like you've got a speck of dust on your lens.
No, wait.
That's a speck of dust on his faceplate, sorry.
:)
Sweet!

That is sweet - what a fine lens, taking a fine picture, coaxed along by the fine talants of a fine photographer. And that's fine with me.

Curse you, Kenny G - I've got a month to wait before my first race of the season, and you just create that much more anxiety.
Seriously, that is a great shot, with a great lens (wait a minute, somebody already said that) - but I must agree.
Now, if you want to verify that your 300 f2.8 will perform in all conditions, around the world, pack it up and send it to me for the month of May, and I will send it back just as I got it, with copies of all shots taken with it included so you can accumulate a portfolio...

From all the examples i've seen this lens (and the non IS version) are very likely the best lenses ever made.!!!!!!
In fact i can confidentally say that there is MUCH more detail that your 1D has missed
I know MTF charts are abit dodgey to judge a lens on but the one for this lens really is a sight to behold- :) :)

It would be interesting to see a third party do their own test, like PopPhoto, Shutterbug, etc. and show their MTF chart.

I've just taken delivery of a T2 mount £24 ebay Photax 500mm lens. Saw it for sale & thought for a laugh I'd try it on the 10D. Taken a couple of hand held test shots & the results are quite good. As impressive as the £17 T2 mount Russian bellows I bought last week.
Auto focus, auto stop down iris & IS would be nice though !.
I'll go out later with the tripod and take some others & post them on my web space.

Hi Any
I have tried many mirror lenses (the cheapies) and recently got some super cheap 400/6.3's to resell.I must say the cheap 400's really are not to bad!
The cheap mirrors i got some good shots with but oooooh man did i throw alot away.
The 400's are all the same but have different brand names on them such as 'tamron popular' ,'Flexar' and 'photax' LOL

I should have said that this is a 16.5" long telephoto. As far as I can see it's got 3 elements, one at the front & 2 at the other end...nice & simple !
I did have a cheapy 500 mirror, never liked it much & sold it on ebay.
