I don't know about greatest, but Gitzo's carbon units are right up there with the best of 'em. For me, I use:
Monopod - 1588Mk2
Tripod - GT3530LSV

Best for the money? Manfrotto 3021 Bpro w/ 488 RC ball head.
I don't dabble in monopods.

I second the motion for the Bogen/Manfrotto 3021BPro (055ProB outside the U.S.) topped off with their 488RC2 ball head.

I have a 3021 Pro with ball head for light duty, and a 3033 with tilt/pan head for heavy duty use.
