I don't know about greatest, but Gitzo's carbon units are right up there with the best of 'em. For me, I use:

Monopod - 1588Mk2
Tripod - GT3530LSV

Best for the money? Manfrotto 3021 Bpro w/ 488 RC ball head.

I don't dabble in monopods.
