when you see dust.
To check for dust do this: during the day, take a picture of a well lit plane at f/22 or smaller. Sky works well, or I also take pictures of my white wall with a flash (hence the ability to do inside and at any time) with lens in MF and de-focused so that wall imperfections can't be mistaken for dust.
Bring file in to photoshop and run Auto Levels.
All the black round spots you see are dust.
Canned air works OK most of the time, but some times you get those sticky spots that just wouldn't move - then I use "Eclipse cleaning solution" and Pec Pads.
Realistically though, I use canned air and don't shoot at apperetures smaller than f/16.
At f/8 you can't see the dust unless it's bread crumbs.

I had to clean mine the first time in 7 months & it was easy. Most vendors don't recommend the canned air but what ever works for you. Here is a few links on cleaning the cmos.

Just like lenses, only clean the sensor when it's really necessary - the less you clean it, the less chance that you accidentally damage it! I have my 10D for 6 months and I've only cleaned it once.
