Sorry if this is innappropriate, but I wanted to share an exciting event in my career as a photo-journalist!

Anyone in the Chicago area knows the Chicago Tribune. Even outside the area, you have probably heard of it. Today is a banner day for me, because a photo I took is on the front page of section 2, "Metro" (west edition). The photo is of the Cavel International horse-slaughtering plant in DeKalb, the only operational plant of its kind in the U.S.

I am so excited that I can hardly breath. It's probably small fries to most of you pros, but for me this constitutes a huge success!

Thanks for letting me vent some of this overwhelming joy!

Pat

Congrats on getting published.

I'll check it out when I get home tonight!.

I too hope you were compensated for your work.

Edit: I just checked Chicagotribune.com, the online artivcle does not have photos...

I am indeed getting paid. I'm not sure how much yet. I'm a freelance reporter, but I didn't write the story that appeared in the paper. I took the picture and a staffer did the story.

Here is the picture. I normally don't watermark stuff, but since I signed a contract, I need to make sure I'm legally in the clear.

u should clone out the power lines. Maybe crop away the sewer pipe. Adjust the curve a bit to enhance the lighting. LOL.... kewl. I don't know what this pix is showing except for a truck pulling into some sort of factory/office. Congrats.

Great news! I'm not yet fortunate enough to have one of my pictures published.

Congrats on getting published and hopefully (well) rewarded.

As for PPing, well there have a been a few well reported cases of newspaper (reportage) photographers who "enhanced" their images getting canned/caned/sacked etc for such 'infringements'. Such photography is deemed to be 'for real' not 'fine art'.

Best of luck with seeing more in print :)

Congrats. So what was the article on that your picture was featured with? I never knew there was such a place that did that. Very interesting.

Congrats again!

I think you should followes delhi's advice, as getting rid of the powerlines will really help improve it:

I hope I'm allowed to edit it aslong as I keep the watermark - if not I will remove it from my ftp.
this is how PJ's get fired from Rueters ;)

photoshop and PJ don't mix well

I assume they published the unshopped original, just a bit cropped off the top and color corrected. Got to keep it real, that's what they say.

I'm still super pumped. All day long I've been telling everyone I know...they're probably getting sick of me very quickly. Time for bed...

Very bad advice to anyone that wants to work in the news/journalism industry.

For photojournalism, please dont take the advice on post processing, there are a couple links on here that discuss about pj's getting fired for that sort of thing. I like the shot and congrats on the photo being published.

Congrats! I can feel your joy. I hope they will use more pictures from you in the future.

A magazine likes a picture I submitted to them, they may publish it. We never talked about pay since I was just checking around to see if I can get press pass from them. But one thing I like to know is that if they mentioned about the payment after they published it or you raised pay issue to them. I like to know because I don't know if I will get paid after they publish my picture and if I should mention it before they do that...

Any experience sharing is appreciated.

Definitely mention it before they publish, if nothing else, just to prevent legal hassles.

If they're any kind of professional organization, they will have a procedure for getting you paid and documented, but just in case they don't, you should certainly ask about it.

I'd like to hear about some other peoples' first pro jobs. Anyone want to share their first experience?

Whether we've been publised a few times or thousands of times, my money says that the great majority of folks here who have been publised remember that first time. It's a special feeling and one you have every right to be proud of. Congratulations!!

I shot for a few years before trying to get published, wanted to make sure I was good enough before even trying (ironic cuz looking back at those photos - man they sucked compared to now, ha). Anyways, contacted one magazine at the right time, finding out the guy who usually does the league down the road from me hasn't been doing it as it turns out he was banned from the stadium. So I started submitting some stuff and got a pic published of a friend and top pitching prospect, he's now a Major League middle reliever and sometimes starter. It was even better because I happened to know him for several years and when I next saw him he autographed a copy for me which I have upstairs still. Good times, good times!

That's a pretty cool story! Would you mind showing us?

Unfortunately, as a journalist I can't take photos of or do stories on people I know very well or am even associated with because of conflict of interest.

ok, this is the signed version as the original was on film. Nothing to spectacular, but it worked. There was another photo published that same issue, but I dont remember who it was and that issue is burried somewhere idk.

Coolness! I never really appreciated sports photography until I started taking pictures myself. Now that I know how much work goes into it, it's a lot more impressive to me.
