Since i got the tamron, we've been having really bad weather. Rain thunderstorms tornados. But I ran out and tried some shots. The focus point is the hydrant. Not so good is it ? Look to the left , the kids slide looks infocus.
There could be some hand shake, but I would think everything would be blurry then.
Any thoughts ?
I couldn't downloaded it here. So I downloaded it at my flickr site.

Were you shooting center point focus only? It looks like it just missed focus, I"d need to see more images to see if there were really a 'problem'.

Yes center point. Do you want me to resize some and post here ? Or post the larger size at flickr ?

Shoot more photos. Did you take lots of pictures and they are all like that, or just one photo?

Here's one where the focus is dead on. I didn't sharpen after resize.

Could you post your EXIF data?
This really looks like a DOF issue not focus issue with the lens. You might try stopping down a bit to get more of the forground and background into focus. But then the hydrant might just be too close to get it all into focus.

try it out a few more times in more settings, if it continues to do that, then I'd return it. Personally, I think it's just a freak event.

I hope so. The package was in rough shape when I got it. But B&H had plenty of padding inside. We'll have better weather tomorrow . I'll give it a try.
I'll add the info for the above picture's. But here's a 100% crop from the day before.
ISO 200 f/4.5 1/50 @17.0mm. I don't think it's bad for handheld.

No work and better weather is expected today. I think B&H is open on Sunday for a little while. Then shutdown for a week. So i'll have to give it a good workout today. I hope it works out. If it doesn't, i'll send it back. Either for another copy or swap it for the Sigma 18-50 macro.
I've taken these same shots when I got the 100-300 & 50-150 with no problem. Both where dead on.

Occasional misses like that will happen sometimes, with any lens. The AF points are much larger than the little boxes in the viewfinder. The AF system looks for contrast, and there is much more contrast between the trees and the sky than anywhere on the hydrant.
Keep shooting. I think your lens is fine.

After using the lens all day, I have come to the conclusion it was all USER ERROR.
Yes, it was my fault.
My focus was just a little off.But enough to make the difference. On some other shots the shutter speed was to slow for me to handhold. So the camera and lens where doing there part. I wasn't :o
Now I know why people like this lens so much. It is sharp. It is a really good lens.:D

Thanks, I think it is too. Most of my shots have been over 100mm, mainly over 200mm. Never really like the kit lens much. It was ok. But I think this lens will open a whole new world for me.

That's the attitude. Keep telling yourself this and every image will come out great!
