My old Zero Haliburton aluminum case that I kept my medium format equipment in was getting pretty beat up, old and downright UGLY. So...I ordered a new Pelican 1550 with the "pick and pluck" foam. This thing rocks! It is cool! Solid built, attractive, roomy, the foam system works great, latches are secure, it's waterproof and has a ventillation valve built in. I don't know why I procrastinated so long (other than being a cheap bastard). Now I have to get 2 more. One for my digital stuff and one for my 35mm stuff. One thing for sure, it will look a whole lot more professional when I show up for my next job than my old tattered, beat up aluminum case, although the Zero Haliburton served me well for a long time. The Pelican comes with an unconditional lifetime warranty also. Did I mention it rocks?

I have the 1520 with the "convertable Travel Bag" instead of the foam in it. The case is a bit smaller then what "G3" got and the customization isn't quite as good but the flexiability of having both a hard and softside bag is great! I just toss the entire case in my truck and if I want a reqular old over the shoulder bag I pull that out and leave the hard shell behind....

G3,
I bought a Zero Halliburton Laptop Case a couple of years ago after I paid $2200 for a new laptop. I think Zero makes very stylish cases, I just didn't expect them to be so heavy. The only other problem I experienced was carrying an alluminum case around an airport...every thief in the building was probably following me.
Has anyone carried their photog equipment in a pelican case as a carry on for a flight? And more important, are they light (weight)?

They are not lightweight (depending on the size, of course), but they are very sturdy. I've had mine for many years. No problem for them as a carry-on, depending on which size you want to carry on. As far as I know there's no metal in them, unless they have a metallic hinge pin--I'm away from mine or I would look.

Yeah, I think the hinge pins are stainless steel. I haven't carried mine on the airlines yet...just got it a couple of days ago. Yesterday I went and bought a 1600 for my 10D and 35mm equipment. I have to try to fit all that stuff in there today. I have 3 bodies, 8 lenses and various other goodies to try to fit in there....maybe there's enough space. :)
They aren't really any lighter that a Z-H, or at least it doesn't feel like it. My Z-H looked good 20 something years ago when I first got it...it was pretty ugly by the time I decided it was time to let it go. It's kind of like an old pair of jeans or sneakers...you just don't want to give it up. But, so far I'm glad I did.

One tip I can lend with Pelican cases and air travel...
I was going through Chicago Midway picking up my luggage from the Southwest area.
Out comes a very distraut (sp?) photog with a big bin the airline had dumped his pelican case and contents into.
Seems that after an inspection, the handlers did not close the case properly. His gear was evidentally thown about out of the case and then dumped into a bin for him to sort through.
My heart was hurting almost as much as this fellow and it wasn't my gear.
To keep this from happening, make sure you secure the lid by another means other than the latches. I don't think using a lock is a good idea, with security like it is now. But, wrapping it with duct tape of gaffers tape would allow security to open the case and then, hopefully, putting it back together. You can also run a big electrical tie through the lock holes. Security can still get in it and it will keep it closed.
I would be very apprehensive about checking my gear. The thought scares me.

In my experience, the foam gives off a fine dust that
is not good. I use the pelican with the deviders and
velcro. When I asked at Samys about another case for
my Video cameras they brought up the "foam dust"...
Could be a consideration.....

Pelican now makes polyethylene foam that is different than the old style foam. Recommended for electronics and it won't shed.

I have a Pelican 1650. Awesome case. It's holding:
2 Photogenic StudioMax II monolights
2 Photogenic Stands
1 Bogen tripod
3 Pocket Wizards (1 TX, 2 RX)
Mounting brackets for the PWs
1 Manfrotto "Light Modifier" shoot-thru umbrella
1 Photogenic Medium Softbox
1 Digital Battery pack and cables for the Photogenics and a 550EX
All the cables to hook it all up.
...In other words... A mini-studio in a box.

I have a number of Pelican cases. One carries my camera and others carry flashes. I use them when caving to protect my camera and flashes from mud, water, dust, dirt, and grime. I have flown with them many times. I put a smaller one inside my checked bag and carry my camera on with me in its case. They are tough cases.

That's an excellent point particularly if you are going to use the case for storage as I would. I think just about any unencapsulated foam would dry out and shed.

I bought a Pelicase from the states and had someone carry it through customs for me on their way back. These cases are superb, I have a lowepro bag with all my kit (or most of it ) in there and at a wedding its great because if anyone treads on it or kicks it its protected.
Plus if you are a short**se like me you can stand on it to gain that extra bit of height.
best case I ever purchased.

Foam dust! What about the little velcro "hairs" that get shed everytime you work with the velcro? specially the heavy duty velcro tapes, so this a lot.

For those of yuo with pelican cases, would you please post photos of how you've arranged the interior, along with the case model number.
I can't visualize how well these can be packed and don't want to have my gear spread over two cases. What do you do with the lens hoods for example?
thanks!

Here is my Pelican. It's a 1610 with rollers. The top part is where all my useful lens and camera located. 2x 1-Series Camera, 50mm f/1.4, 24-70mm f/2.8L, ST-E2, 2x 580EX. The extra space is to await for the 70-200 f/2.8L IS :)
The under layer is where I put the "specialized" Prime lens and accessories

.........they do rock...... My job (police crime scene) uses the 1550 exclusively, and they take one hell of a beating. As a matter of fact, Ive seen a member of my unit hurl his across a parking lot in a fit of rage with a 20D/10D inside, and both were unscathed (yes, he should be on a rubber gun squad......Ive recommended St Johns Wort  ).
There is some dust from the foam, but I have never encountered a problem in 15 years with any of my equipment from same.

Bill

Just got a black 1500 foam case this week. The difficult part of this deal is how to organize and place the various pieces of equipment in the case before plucking. It's goin' on 2 days of indecision...But it's a GREAT case!

I have the Pelican 1520 with the Lowepro soft bag inside. It's great for my 20D and related stuff. Take in the rain to the sailboat. Can go in the inflatable and not worry about spray etc. The only problem is you can't put in a 20D with the extra battery base on and a lens on. The bag is too thin for that. So I put the 20D face down with no lens (just cover) on but that doesn't make the soft bag alone quite as handy when you are actively using the camera and want the lens attached. You may need another shoulder bag if you want that feature when you aren't using the Pelican. Without the extra battery base it would fit fine with the lens on but in my case it is more trouble taking the base on and off than to take off the lens. Great product these Pelicans!

I've been looking at this cases for a while now.
You get lsited the external and internal dimensions. External I can understand, but internal dimensions, is that bare case dimensions of dimensions with lid and base foam but not central layer foam ?
I.e. how would I know if a 10D with grip would fit standing up ? Etc.
Cheers

I think you'll need the 1550 case to do that. It seems like inside dimensions are shown without foam above and below. I would try it with your camera at a shop before you buy to make sure. :)

There is a website at casecad.com which can custom cut the foam in a case to your specfications and in addition you can download a cad program to trace you equippment and submit it to them. As far as I can tell it is for Pelica cases or you tell them the deminsions. Good luck:D

I bought the Pelican 1510 which has wheels and a slide out handle and is the right size to fit in the airlines overhead bin. These things are really tough. I got the one with the dividers in order to avoid the shedding foam problem. The only problem i have is that space is a bit limited. i have it filled to the brim with a 20D, 5 lenses and 580EX and 420EX. i guess it's just a matter of prioritizing my shooting needs before leaving the house and filling in accordingly.
