Hi guys

I went to my local track today 31st March. Llandow Circuit near Cardiff in Wales.

Thought I'd try and snap a few pictures of some fearless kids on their 50cc bikes. I used a Canon EOS 1D & Canon 100-400 L Lens.

I haven't mastered the controls of the 1D yet so the following pictures were taken in auto mode!

I'd welcome criticism particularly of the constructive variety :)

How could the pictures have been improved:

1. By cropping?
2. By using manual mode?
3. Photoshopping?
4. Anything else?

I like the last one the most...

I wish I had a 100-400L for my first lens!

Wow, 1D and a 100-400L for a first camera!! Talk about running before you can walk. I think the first piccie is the direction you should head in, good shot.

I've had didgital cameras for years, my last was a Canon D30. I'm still just a snapper but I've decided I want to learn and get better.

The 1D I have now is the original Mk1.

Buy some spare batteries and take lots of shots :D

Around 1/320th or so to start in TV mode with center point AI servo AF.
Go higher or lower in shutter speeds to taste.
Higher for more head on shots where you can't see the sides of the wheels (can't see them - no need to blur them).
Lower for pans to get the nice blur.

Shoot lots :)

Thanks for the info.

I've seen 1/320th mentioned a few times whilst reading through the many threads. I definately need to spend time getting familiar with the camera controls so changing settings becomes more or less automatic instead of having to ponder how to do it.

Having viewed many of the other pictures here and in other threads made me reluctant to post my pictures. I know there are so many aspects that could have been done better, but if you don't ask, you don't learn :)

Thanks

your pictures are great! I've been on track but these lads make it feel like I was pushing a pram. they say the best shots are when you see them looking where they want the bike to go and you've caught that spot on. On the advice front I'd say frame the shot to leave more space for where they're going than where they've been. That said it's hats off...

If you could get access to the inside of the turns, you could get some great face shots. ( and with that gear, that should be a snap;) )

I totally agree with NewattheGame.

Those little guys are looking right through that corner.
