I was able to make it down to the North Yorkshire forests just outside Whitby for one of the stages of the 2007 North Humberside Forest Rally. Gutted I couldn't stay for the second running of the stage, but had a cracking time none the less. Fairly misty early on, and cold as well but surprisingly the stages were dry and dust was my biggest problem. Anyway, on to some pictures....
#1 Immacculate Nova running in the 1400 class at the head of the field.

#2 Rally winner Steve Perez in his Ford Focus WRC

#3 Nearly a landscape shot!

#4 Beefy looking Ford Puma - lost a drive shaft before the end of this stage unfortunately.

#5 Rude not to feature a mk II Escort in a rally thread

#6 A slightly more modern version

#7 Quite a few Hyundai Accent WRC's were out to play

#8 Fastest car out there until he put off backwards on the third stage. Local man Ryan Champion in an ex Alastair McCrae Evo

All the shots were taken with a 1D mk I + Sigma 120-300mm f2.8.

Very nice Simon, I see from the shot of Hugh Hunter and Damian Cole you must have been near the start of the stage, for a no spectator stage there were plenty there:lol:
Cheers

Thanks Ian. Hugh and Damian made it about 300 or 400 yards into stage before their off. I could see through the viewfinder they were going a bit quicker than everyone else through to that point, and that they were quite a bit wider. I got a good showering with dust and stones from them, and when it cleared wasn't too surprised to see them in the ditch on the opposite side of the road.
As far as spectators, there would be less than half a dozen where I was, and there was only about 4 or 5 walked passed me prior to the stage going live. The majority of people seemed to have been at the other end of the stage.
Cheers,
Simon.

Thanks Dave. Must admit that I do like the dust in the background as well. Had to clean all my gear though afterwards  .

Simon, what shutter speed was used for the closer shots? I see you've managed to get nice wheel blur there. Did you use 1/320th or similar?
Thanks,
Cliff

Hi Cliff.
All of the shots were taken at either 1/250s or 1/320s, the latter being about the fastest shutter speed I would use for a 3/4 pan.
Cheers,
Simon.

Thanks Darren.
Spotted the clean background in #3 and thought I would see what I could get. If I was to take it again, I would probably re-position the car in the frame a little (it's a bit too central for me) by using a different AF point.
Cheers,
Simon.

Really nice set, but the ford puma has got to be one of the ugliest cars I have ever seen.

Thanks JuZ. As for #3, it was just pure luck that I was able to find a location with such a clean background. Mind you, it would have maybe looked better with loads of spectators lining the route to give it a bit more atmosphere!
Cheers,
Simon.

Nice shots Simon. You can't beat a bit of flying dust & stones, so long as it doesn't go any where sensitive!

So you haven't forgotten the Grizedale incident that caused you and Peter so much amusement  .
Only got hit twice this time ;) , once in the back when one of the Hyundai's ran wide, and then in the ribs when a Fiesta threw a stone at me before it had even reached where I was standing. Dangerous occupation this rally photography :p  .
Cheers,
Simon.
