What would a lens with 1mm focal length look like?

I would assume it would be a very distorted, 180-degree, fish-eye shot.

You would probably be looking at the back of your head...lol

Depends on the format. I would say that for DSLRs, it's likely impossible to build, as the sensor/film is too large. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the camera phone lenses approach 1mm focal length (with really, really tiny sensors), or they will someday.

The camera on my LG phone is listed as 2.6mm. Like you said, I think it's bascially impossible to do such a thing with an SLR camera.

Well, I was interested in what a 1mm would look like on a 35mm sensor. I hear people talking about accidentally getting their feet in a 16mm composition, so 1mm must be pretty extreme (corrected for distortion, of course).
I personally think it's very possible for 1mm on a very, very, small sensor with large crop factors.
However, if impossible to build, what would 1mm on 35mm sensor theoretically look like?

It would look and perform 1mm better than nothing.
I am not crazy about such a lens..

The shortest focal-length lens made for 35mm format was the Nikkor 6mm (they made a f/5.6 and then a physically much bigger f/2.8 version). It had a 220 degree field of view. Still some way off a 1mm though.

It's a rediculous looking lens too:
Take a look at a review. (http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/fisheyes/6mmf28.htm)
It was several times larger than the camera in order to wrap around beyond 180. Interesting, though!

It would vignetter badly and only go up to 180 degrees coverage.

That is just retardedly cool.

I had no clue about those lenses. 220* is insane.

Hm, interesting lens... the Nikon 6mm...
