I typically use my 420ex in e-ttl mode on my 10d, but I'm shooting film for class this week and I have an old Rebel S (1000N?). The rebel doesn't use e-ttl, so is it safe to assume there is no preflash when the flash is triggered in regular ttl mode? I'm interested in triggering studio strobes (lack of pc sync outlet on rebel s)

According to the 420EX Manual, your camera is a Type B body. That means it is TTL, with flash controlled by the amount of flash read off the film. There is no pre flash. The 420EX has no manual mode though, so I don't know how you would use it with studio strobes.

Because the studio strobes will trigger on the flash from the 420ex. The ETTL preflash would trigger the strobes prematurely.

G3,
That doesn't answer my point above. The 420EX will be on TTL, as there is no manual mode. It will trigger the strobes when it fires its main flash (no pre flash),and in turn will be shut down by the light from the studio strobes in addition to its own because of the reflected light measured by the TTL sensor. How do you propose to meter and set up the lights? Any change to the strobes will result in an inverse change to the 420EX. This would be simple with a flash with a manual mode like the 550EX, but the 420EX doesn't have a manual mode.

Yep, you are right about that....but the question was only with triggering the slave. I wouldn't use a dedicated flash for this...as you said, either a 550 in manual mode or something like a Vivitar 283, but not a 420. But...the 420 will trigger the slaves.....maybe he was going to have another slave strobe next to the camera to use for main flash (or at reduced power for fill)?
