Well, I feel I owe this to the group even if I am sheepishly admitting that I am a moron sometimes (MS in Math from Northwestern so not always).

After taking some shots around town and having them be sharp enough to count the hair on peoples heads I went back to my baseball shoot to see what it was I did wrong. It turns out that I was cropping such a small part of the photo and then trying to make it 8x10, there was absolutely no way it was going to work. I guess I was so excited to have used my new toy that I forgot about simple rules. I'm not sure that the 11 megapixel camera would have worked for what I was trying to do.

In any event I want to thank all those who took the time to respond, this group has been a treasure trove of information for me so far.

Well I'm glad to hear that it's OK. I know the feeling of thinking like you did. When I first got the 100-400 I thought it could do anything. I learned it's limitations - well, some of them anyway - and don't push it so much any more. But all that does is make me lust for a 600mm f/4. :(

That's great news! Glad to see that the lens is working out.

I have to admit though that you could probably count the hairs on my head on one hand. :)

What are your thoughts on the new Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM w/Mode 2 lens? I'm wanting to purchase maybe a used EF 70-200mm f/4L lens too but also I like the 300mm range. Your response is appreciated. Thanks..
