I will be buying a Hoya thin polarizer in a couple of weeks, and have noticed at B&H two identical filters, except that one provides UV in conjunction to polarizing, while the other only provides polarizing. Both are priced the same, which is $173.00 each.
I have thought that perhaps I should buy the combined UV/polarizer, but in reality I only need the polarizing portion of the filter, not both. What is the drawback of using such a combo filter? Is there any advantage you can think of?
I will be using it with a Tokina 12-24mm lens, which is not really very wide at 12mm when mounted on my Rebel XT.

I'm not sure I understand the point of combining UV and CPL filters either.

Straight CP. UV, except for protection, doesn't really do anything for digital cameras.

Agreed. Didn't even know they combined 'em these days... Whatever for?
Whatever you end you end up getting - make sure it's multi-coated!

Thanks.
They are both multi-coated, and there is no price difference. This one is:"Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer (S-HMC) Super Multi-Coated Glass Filter - Thin"

The other is:
Price : $ 172.50
77mm Circular Polarizer/UV Haze (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter - Ultra Thin
Mfr # 017727
It seems that the "ultra-thin" is just multi-coated plus UV, while the "thin" one (top) is super multi-coated. I just can't understand the reason for combining polarization and UV light protection. I wonder if the ultra-thin would be a better filter for the 12-24 Tokina?

The first one doesn't have front threads, so you won't be able to use a lens cap with it - just something to think about.

I missed that part in the specifications. It seems that the second one (ultra-thin) is a better choice for an extra wide lens, so I will buy this one.
