I am new to this and I keep seeing UV filters and things like that.

What are they for? Protection? image quality?

I am using a 20D with a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and a sigma 70-300 apo macro

Search the forum for "UV filter" and you will find volumes of discussions on the subject.

My personal opinion - UV filters are a total waste of money unless you shoot in very hazardous (to glass) environments like in blowing sand, etc.

Fact - cheap UV filters ARE a total waste of money. If you wish to use a UV filter (or any filter, for that matter), make sure you buy the best quality multicoated filter than you can afford.
