After a hard day in Wales shooting a club track day with Dave_G and a even harder night on the booze at the Red Lion, we set off for Qualifying Day at Brands for the BTCC with furry tongues and chugging down the Red Bull!

Overall I had a very enjoyable day (highlight being a superb breakfast at Hailwoods cafe!) also took some pics, so I thought I would get some them up for scrutinee.

Usual kit involved - 350D, 70-200F4, 100-300F4 + 1.4x TC

Let's start off with a fluke, I was meant to be doing some 3/4 shots of the cars coming up the hill into Druids, but noticed this Red Clio would flame out on overrun into the hairpin.. hence the high speed 1/250th sec pan!

And another, whilst doing some 1/100th sec pans going into Druids.. Mr. Bell decides to totally lock up.. hence the 3/4 shot at 1/100th and then the pan! lol

I liked this car, whistling DERV! Silent as you like..

Probably the only picture I got of Tim Harvey in his Porsche with someone behind him, he romped away from the rest of the field in his Carrera Cup race..

Very nice. Particularly like the first shot of Harvey, nice angle that - and you seemed to have avoided the lovely fence.

Not sure about you but I was there on Saturday 31st rather than Friday 30th ;)

Cheers mate, the fence can be defeated.. notice the focal length recorded in the EXIF (350mm).. Siggy 100-300 + 1.4x TC and with the afternoon light the fence was taken out of the equation.

Lol, yes it was the 31st.. my, it was a long / hardcore weekend with Dave_G! :P

Good stuff, the full pan of Mr. Bell is my favourite... and it's not often I like a pan shot, this one wins because the car is actually doing something interesting

Those are great! How far from the track were you? How are you able to get such a clear shot with such a slow shutter speed? It seems when I go below 1/160 my whole shot is slightly blurred.

I've never been a big motorsport fan, not something i can watch on the TV, but i've got to say that actually being there makes all the difference! A couple of my mates were going on Sunday, and as i hadn't photographed motorsports before, i thought what the hell..... I had a great day, and can't wait to go again!

All really nice shots Taity, great job catching the breaking, that really adds an extra element to the shots. I especially like the shot of Plato, he had a cracking day! ;)

Cheer Glen, it's always nice to capture something interesting, rather than the same old stuff. Have to admit there were a lot of "normal" stuff in amongst the interesting lot tho! lol

On the pan shots I was probably about 15ft away from the cars I guess, maybe a little more. You have to practice, practice, practice your panning technique so as to capture the car sharply and leave the background a blur at slow shutter speeds. Dave_G gave me some good tips on gently de-pressing the shutter button (so as not to knock the camera up and down when panning) and also to keep a firm (yet pliable, ooer!) grip on the lens and camera body.

Cheers Beano, have to say that I have always been into my cars.. sad but true! :P

Thanks, the Clio's were doing that ALL day at Druids.. so quite easy to catch.
