Challenge #65 - Minimalism

This week's challenge is a genre. Composition will be important in order to capture the minimalism of your subjects. Try to avoid busy and cluttered backgrounds. You can choose to express the loneliness of a subject (i.e. an apple on a bare table), or you can go the abstract way (i.e. part of your shadow on concrete).

Another valid definition: "The term "minimalist" can also refer to anything which is spare, stripped to its essentials, or providing only the outline of structure, independent of the particular art movement [...]" (Wikipedia)

Examples of minimalism (http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/minimalism-in-photography/)

Other examples & ideas (http://www.pbase.com/sheila/minimalism)

Don't forget the rules, and a small description is always welcome - it doesn't give any points, but it can help the judge understanding your point of view about your entry.

Experiment new methods and settings, and have fun shooting!

Farm cats show up every morning for food, unless there are predators around (coyotes, hawks, bobcats) then they go into hiding for several days. My wife gives them all names, this one she calls Twoface.

First of, thank you to all challengers. I had some remorse after I set the topic, as I was afraid that I could’t get enough entries. I was wrong!

1st place: O_T’s “two”
The white background worked very well for this shot. Even though the subject isn’t small, it’s still “lost” in the photo. Bananas. Rack. That’s it. Composition, color and quality were also factors in my choice.

2nd place: dyle’s Serenity
Almost abstract. Looked to me like water paint stripes. :) I also liked the slight variations in tints between bands.

3rd place: barbazan’s Spring
Nice use of a blurred background to isolate a simple subject.

Runner up:
hackmo: I really considered your photo for the top 3, but you forgot to write a title. Otherwise all rules were respected. Very nice photo, fitted the theme quite well! Welcome to the forum, hope to see you participate in the next challenges and in the forum as well.

Misc. comments:
Cindi:
Beautiful photo! I just thought the blury straws made for a too busy background. It wasn’t top three just because of my interpretation of the topic, but it’s a nicely done photo.

Paul B:
:D

snowrdr:
Excellent photo! Isn’t minimalistic enough according to me, nice capture nonetheless.

Edd S:
What, a serious entry? ;) Very good silhouette. Have you tried a black & white version?

spur:
Good photo. The blury background is nice, but the focused area is a little bit too busy.

stanley_pope:
I like the cat, but there’s too much hair. :)

benarnold:
Too much details, even if the background is blurred. A black sheet behind the first bottle would have qualified this photo for sure!

It wasn’t easy picking the top 3, as always. Please don’t refrain from entering more contests, there was many real nice photos, and I sure didn’t like putting some aside, but the theme was somewhat relative to our own interpretations.

This ends this weeks challenge. Thank you to all contestants!!! I shall now pass the torch to O_T for the next challenge.

Well, I really don't think I deserve 1st place in this one. Some truly astounding entries I thought. Excellent topic Jeece. Thank you very much for the recognition.
I'll have something up real soon. You people amaze me with your talent. Point and shoot they may be, but you folks are photographers.

Excellent challenge subject Jeece, there are some very good photos entered here and a lot of interesting interpretation on what minimalism is. Thanks for taking the time to critique.

I think my favourite was Novaheart's patio umbrella, I can see how that would make a good desktop wallpaper too. Dyle's minimal colours are also great.

I really liked a lot of the photos this week, good work everybody.
