I used my Digital Rebel to take pictures of the stars. I can record stars as faint as magnitude -10 with the lens that came with my camera. Here's a picture of Jupiter and its 4 moons I took with my Tameron 28-300 zoomed in to 300 on a 2 second exposure (iso 1600). 2 seconds was necessary to record the moons, but probably a much faster time might show detail on Jupiter itself, as it is seriously overexposed in this image.
