Well, you take a couple of good shots and it seems like half the world wants the image. So far I have had 6 phone calls and 8 e-mails from web sites and magazines asking permission to use them.

The best e-mail so far and the one I appreciate most, is from the driver of the number 39 car in the shot asking for a copy.

Well, one thing has come out of all this, never leave an action event until the fat lady sings. A new rule to be printed on my forehead so I see it in the mirror every morning.

This is the car a few laps before the incident when it and he were unscathed.

Kenny - great stuff.

A year or so after I started going to races a friend of mine, who was a medical photographer by trade, came to a race and got bit by the bug. As we were walking around the track (Watkins Glen), we stopped for a rest and he wanted to change lenses. I was watching the action, and when I turned around he had everything laid out on the ground (on a cloth) - lens, caps, lens cleaning kit. I said "Try to keep it in your bag - you never know when something might happen" and my words were cut short by a noise and crowd commotion. Jacky Ickx had crashed almost directly in front of us, and the crowd rushed to see what had happened. Luckily, we were back from the fences, so his stuff did not get trampled, but to this day we both recall the immediate reinforcement of my suggestion. :D

The moral of the story is to always be ready to shoot, and remain mobile. 8)

I know I don't have to say this to you, but maybe others can benefit.
Treat the drivers and teams you photo well and it will pay off for you.
I am glad he was alright and your photos are awesome. Lokks like you had some very nice lighting and great track position.
Make sure you charge the magazines a competetive price for your work.

Kenny where are the crash shots? Do you have them on a gallery where we can see them?

I agree with you about giving the driver a copy of the crash shot. Usually I ask if they will sign a copy for me and give them an 8x10.

This shot illustrates one of my long ago recurring nightmares. You’re in front when you have an attack of “Brain Fade” & everyone’s right there behind you. Never got ‘T-boned’, but I remember a race when we started out with sunshine & then it rained. No one would go in for rain tires ‘till someone else did so we just kept on going. I got sideways 6 times trying to stay far enough ahead so I could really lose it & not have someone right behind me when I did. The last time, everyone had caught up so I had to wait to get back on & I was then in last place. Lot’s of fun, though!
(Sorry for the ramble… I may be getting a bit senile! Can’t remember what the word means anymore, so I guess that’s OK!)

Frank, I know what you mean. Even something as simple as testing a race car is hazardous. I was trying to get the brake balance right when brain, feet and hands failed to work in unison and I ended up in the gravel staring at the barrier only two feet away. Now, I watch other people do it, its nearly as much fun.

I have a site which I set up just for samples. If you want to have a peek at some of my very recent work then visit www.motorpix.co.uk

I have also been told that my Legends photos (not the crash ones) will be used in a race program and a magazine, plus one of my F3/GT meeting shots may even get a front cover next month and another has been bought by one of the manufacturers. What a hectic last couple of weeks.

The crash may look spectacular and be a crowd pleaser, but my favourites of the day, if you will indulge me, are these three. No special reason, I just happen to like them.

Kenny...
I was trying to get the brake balance right
I had a problem at one track that had a hump right at my breaking point at the end of the straight. It unloaded the rear & when I came down I’d twist off a rear u-joint. The quick fix 5 minutes before grid time was to unhook & plug the rear brake lines at the master cylinder. It was great! Best braking I’d ever had. Next race I had bigger pads & a proportioning valve that turned the backs way down. (Downside was all the black brake dust on the front wheels.) Rear braking is what gets you into trouble. I should have remembered that from doing ‘Curtis Turner’ turns in a parking lot using the emergency brake.

I have a site which I set up just for samples.
I especially liked the shot of the Super 7s (?). Never seen so many together in one pic before. Here’s a scan from an old “C” print:

Way to go!

my favourites of the day
“Every which way but loose...”
My crew once told me that I was unloading like that at a new track that had an uphill section that ended right at the apex of a curve. Did they take a pic of it? Nooooo…
I had to give them a little talk about priorities!
:D
OK, enough of this. Have a good one!

Does the fat lady shoot a Canon also?

Absolutely, his CD will be in the post tomorrow. I have told him that his brother, number 38, can have access to the files as well. I don't want to start any sibling rivalry. :) They have to meet up on track again very soon.

Kenny,
Great news, that's the power of the net.
Maybe it can be the start of something even bigger :D.

Have fun.

Wow,love to here these race experience stories 8)
It's been a while since i got a chance to race anything

Hey while we're all talking about racing...the best 'race' i ever had was on a public road with an ancient RD yamaha (air cooled) that was so slow i was barely braking the speed limit.I was playracing against a friend on a later LC model-but he had his girlfriend on with him which effectively equaled the bikes perfectly. On a long winding valley road we passed and repassed )purely because of drafting) so many times i lost count :D :D :D
