There is a review of the D70 here:

DPREVIEW has it highlighted today.
He likes it, but my opinion is he is biased.

Is it really so surprising that Nikon made a good, even a great camera? They do after all make the F5. Technological advances both quantitative and qualitative are good for all of us regardless of who puts them out. It raises the bar for everyone.
My 2c,

Sorry, I was distracted and I had to make the original post short.
I absolutely think competition improves the offerings, and it seems like Nikon returned a good shot at Canon. Canon's response will be good for those (like me) that are committed to Canon. :D
It is quite a long review, and I did not have time to read it all, but let me (my Canon bias notwithstanding) try to summarize my opinion that it is biased. He says:
-AWB could be better.
-It underexposes .3 to .7 EV
-He acknowledges the moire issue, but still rates it higher than the Drebel.
-Acknowledges that it has worse noise 'by the numbers' than the Drebel, but says its okay.
-does acknowledge that the Canon 18-55 is better at Macro.
-Overall rates it higher than the Drebel.
To be fair, I would like to see his review of the Drebel to see how the tone of the two reviews compare, but as with many reviews, the details do not support the overall evaluation in my mind. Also, The closest I have been to a D70 is the other side of a display case, so what do I know? :?
These two cameras are consumer-grade products. While the failings may be able to be adjusted in PS Elements, Joe Snapshot probably won't bother. Then again, he may not even notice them. But cameras in this class should consistently produce an acceptable exposure in the 'dummy' mode, not underexposed.
Just my opinion. I may be wrong. :?

:) i am glad that someone think this review was biased too!! i had the exact same feeling.
to bring my pinch of salt, i think that really the d70 is a sort of 10D which came very late. It is also a cross over between the product range that both 300D and 10D represent. And i think that in this respect Nikon has found a very cleaver way of concurrencing both 300D and 10D market ... kind of one stone two shots. and i totally agree that the d70 is better than the 300D, no doubt about that.
However ... .... what is comming up next from canon in the 10 D range???

Interesting point about two shots with one stone. Just off the top of my head, one return volley from Canon might be a killer replacement for the 10D combined with a price drop for the Drebel. There certainly is room for an upgraded 10D while still maintaining room between it and the 1D MKII. And a price drop is a sure way to get the attention of the general public. But Canon doesn't seem to like price drops, so who knows? :?
Whatever happens, leapfrog in this case will be good for our capabilities, but potentially hard on our wallets.
