after carefully looking at the specs, just adding a 512 ATI card (more than enough for Photog) this is a system for life.

In over 10 years of using Photoshop, I can say in the next 10-15 years Photoshop will run on a lot less power.

This is a one time life time system as far as power goes.
Considering I still run a dual 450Mhz G4 :) 6 years later.

That system is absolutely amazing.

8 Cores @ 3Ghz
8 GB Ram

... About 5500 ... so I have to forfeit buying the 300 2.8, not that big of a deal

Wow, and I thought my Mac Pro was powerful. Damn. I'm pretty sure my system as is will be sufficient for the next 5-7 years without a doubt. Computers get so powerful to the point where the power can't possibly be fully utilized by the ordinary consumer. It's like the cell phone fad where they kept getting smaller and smaller until they were just too small. Its at a point where you could safely buy a system now that would do everything you needed to for the next 10 years.

I wonder how fast Excel & Word would run on the new 8 Core ;)

Exactly what I have been waiting for!

I've wanted to ditch Windows for almost a year now but I knew they were getting the 8 Core ready so I've been holding out.

If I'm nice can I put my hands on it?

Can't really say "extra" as there is no competition ;)

Nothing. In fact, they pay you $200 to take the case off them.

Disclaimer: Given that the Mac Pro costs $200 extra.

One? I'd buy one for every room in my house. Except the bathroom, I'd buy a macbook for that.

You know, that's what I said when I built my current system three years ago. :D

But yeah, this looks like a special case!!

The mac pro actually doubles for a refridgerator.

That's right folks! The mac pro even houses a beer-holder to keep your beer cold while you're WOW-ing it up :)

Nice machine. I haven't been keeping up with comp tech lately (I used to be an extremely dedicated computer enthusiast, who overclocked, built, tweeked in general, etc etc), but lately with my finding of photog I've grown out of computers and now seem much more interested in cameras and doing something that gets me out of the house w/ less time in front of the computer.
Can you build something like this yourself? I'm going to take a guess and say probably not, this computer seems pretty damn advanced. Yes, a premium price, partly because it's Apple, but I think this is probably worth it for any professional or enthusiast with some serious change. Couple this with a couple 24" monitors or a 30", and I think you'd be set for some serious processing, of course with a crazy raid hard drive setup and multiple externals. Photo processing beyond the basics, and even those (i.e. processing raws in lightroom) seem to just KILL resources, my dual core AMD machine seems pretty damn slow, probably partly because of Vista.

Heck you can do better,. there are some spiffy Quad Opteron motherboards out there,. and AMD's Quad Core Opterons will be out soon,.

That's 16 cores :)

Then there's iWill's 8 Socket board...
http://www.amdboard.com/iwill_h8502_8way.html

With current dual cores, that's 16 Cores, with the upcoming quads,. that's 32 cores!

But the Mac is just running the new Xeon Quad, so yes, you could build one yourself.

You could, but you'd have to use a server MOBO I think, a tyan or something (if that's the right company name.)
I'm not sure it'd be cheaper, or any faster / more efficent.

Kinda like the difference in a 31MP Hasselblad and a 39MP Hasselblad, what's the point.

The 3GHz quad-core CPU at the heart of the fastest system is currently an unannounced model that sits at the top of the company's performance range and is presently used only by Apple.

If we start getting into server territory, I'll just have to mention that at work I fly a Sun 6900 with 32 cores and 48Gbytes of memory. Expandable to 48 cores and 64Gbytes of memory. Not that I have access to one but a Sun 25K will go to 144 cores and > 1Tbytes of memory.

None of which run PS though :)

My dad works in datacenters. Some of those computers have like 64 cpu's. Crazy sun stuff, I've been in the datacenter, I think some of them are several million a piece.

Well, my mac pro cost about $100 less than a very similiar configuration from dell. So I'd say -$100.
