For my EE galleries, I've chosen 1200px to be the optimum resolution for the high quality shots, and have EE resizing downward to 800px and 320px for the smaller versions.
However, the bog standard php resize (GD2), isn't all that good.

As you can see the quality and sharpness of the large version is far superior to the 800px version.
As far as I can tell, my hosting company doesn't provide ImageMagick. Is this something I can install myself from somewhere, or do I have to request this from the hosting company?
And... If and when I do get ImageMagick installed, will it give better results than what you see above?
