Sorry if this is an elementary question but when I shoot raw(I rarely shoot this way) I don't get thumbnails when I look in the browser on PS. I have version 8. I can open the file with photoshop but what do I have to do to get thumbnails visible in the browser window? Thanks

Are you saving the camera produced thumbnail in the same folder? If not try that.

Follow the whole sequence of events.
When you shoot RAW, the RAW file and a THM file are stored on the CF card. Now, how are you transferring those files to the computer? Have you still got the THM file there?

PSCS isn't going to show you the thumbnails as a sepate file in the browser. It uses the thumbnail file when it first creates the thumb of the RAW images to speed up the thumbnail display in the browser but that's all it does with it. In other words, it's not going to display the thumbnail itself so that you can edit it. If you want to do that (not sure why you would but if you did) you'd have to change the THM extension to JPG.
Or am I misunderstaning your question/problem?
[edit] OK, I just reread your post and I think what you are trying to say is that instead of getting a thumbnail of your RAW files, what you get is a standard ICON in it's place, right? I've had that happen to me once before and I think it has something to do with the cache. Off the top of my head, I don't remember what I did to fix it and I can't look into it right now because I'm not on my desktop but if this is your problem, I'll dig into it for you when I get home tonight (unless someone else comes up with the solution before hand).

OK, give this a try and see if it works for you.
In PSCS, go into the Browser window and click on the folder where the images you're having problems with is stored, if you're not there already.
Now click on File in the browser window, not the File in the Photoshot window. You should get a drop down window with one of the options being "Purge Cache". Select "Purge Cache" and click "OK" to the prompt message box that comes up. Hopefully this will recreate the thumbnails for you.
Good luck.
