Can someone who uses the 135/2L tell me if a tripod/monopod ring adapter can be used with this lens? Or do you have to connect the camera to the monopod and then mount the lens to the camera? I would much rather do the former. Thanks.

I thought this lens would be light (and fast enough) to hand-hold. I've had my eye on this lens...how do you like it? What type of work are you doing that requires a mono/tripod mount?

I don't own the lens. I wanted to know if I could use the lens with a monopod before I bought it. The lens weighs 1.64 lbs, just slightly more than the 70-200/4L does (1.56 lbs), and I find that it is helpful to use the monopod with the latter lens when shooting portraits as the sun sets (sweet light).

I have the lens, there does not seem to be a recessed area for a tripod collar and I don't recall that a tripod collar was listed as an accessory for this lens (as it was for the 70-200 f4).
The lens is really sharp and I have no difficulty using the lens with a monopod (it is pretty similar in size and weight to the 17-40 f4).

Here is Canon's list of accessories for the lens:

Doesn't look like you can get a collar for it...

Thanks for the responses. I guess I've gone a little monopod crazy since I discovered how useful one is with my 70-200/4L. Now I want to use it with anything that even looks heavy. If I need to use one with this lens, I'll just have to connect the monopod to the camera.

May I ask which monopod? I'm trying to decide on one myself.
thanks

Susan, I am using the Manfrotto 3245, which was recommended by several people on this board. It's the best I've seen.
The 3245 is automatic: when you sqeeze the handle, it releases so that you can slide it up and down to get just the right height. When you release the grip, it locks in place. The other monopods that I've looked at--and I even have one in the closet--all of them work by you twisting to unlock them, then setting the height, then twisting to lock. It's such a pain that my first monopod has stayed in the closet since the day I first used it.
The difference will seem subtle in reading this, so try it in the camera store and you'll see why many of us wouldn't use anything else.
You might have trouble finding one. When I bought mine a couple of weeks ago, B&H was out (I've never seen *that* before!). Camera World and Calumet's main store were out. I eventually found one at the NYC Calumet. If you call the main store in Chicago they can give you the 800 number.
I hope this helps.
