View Full Version : How much memory do you go through on a trip?

I'm going to be taking my 20d on a 10 day trip to Spain in June. I was thinking of getting a 100 GB HyperDrive Space, but now I'm having second thoughts. For about the same price, I could get six 4 GB Sandisk Ultra II cards. Granted that would only give me 1/4 of the storage, but take up less space, be less hassle, and probably more reliable. I'm just wondering if it is unreasonable to think I need that much storage anyway. I usually shoot RAW + Large JPEG, but thought about going with RAW + Small JPEG to squeeze a few more pictures on the cards. I've never taken a big trip like this with digital, so I'm not sure, but I'm expecting to shoot like a maniac. Do you guys ever shoot more than 24 GB worth of pictures on a trip?

Bill, will you have a laptop or something along as well? In June I will be on a trip and I only have one CF card at the moment. I plan on simply uploading the pictures to my computer once the card is getting full or whenever I have the time. That is the option I would take if you really don't want to spend the money...
Otherwise of the two options you mentioned, either one really can't go wrong although as you mentioned getting the extra hard drive would take up more space.

No, I won't have a laptop along. I don't know if I'll be albe to find internet cafes or anyplace I could back up to DVD. But, I'm going to assume that I'll be limited to whatever storage I take with me.

I carry, 4GB worth of memory with me at all times and on jobs i always carry around an 80GB Flastrax. So i can dump my cards!
On holiday i use the same principle.

On vacation last year (6 weeks) took 30GB of photos.
After the first 10 days shot exclusively in RAW only.
Used two 40GB Vosonic/Wolverine portable drives for back up.
Carried 4 1GB cards during the day, but never needed more than 2, and backed them up to each drive (duplicated). On days we were travelling my wife carried one and I carried the other.

I do contract work on a cruise ship and I go through 6 1 gig cards daily. I usually take over 1500 pictures per day and at the end of the evening, I transfer them all to laptop, then burn them to CD. If you don't take a laptop, you can still use the computers on board for free. (you have to pay for internet though but burning disks is not a problem) Likewise you should find an internet cafe and take a short rest break and burn to CDs there.

We took a 7 day cruise on our honeymoon and I racked off 22 gigs and we only had 3 days when we went ashore....I was shooting raw+large but still that was only 3 days plus maybe 3 gigs on the boat. I took my laptop as it fit nicely in my bag, only to download and burn discs right away. I dont take chances that some x-ray machine or other freak wipes out my whole vacation footage....always back up to DVD or CD-r when traveling......you never know when something bad might happen.

No kidding!
I backup so much it's not even funny ... better safe though.

Interesting posts. I was wondering some of the same things. We'll be spending nearly two weeks in Monterey/Big Sur and Yosemite. I started with a 1GB card. Then I bought a 2GB card and another 2GB card. Then I thought what the heck, why not just take the laptop and transfer the images as we go along. At home, I usually transfer at the end of day and delete on the card so why not on the road?
So... why not?

Ed, no problems with that as long as you have more than just your laptop for your files. Make sure to copy to a CD or DVD, too. Then put them in a safe place while you're out filling your cards.
Oh, and make sure that you spend some time on Highway 1 along the coast. I guarantee that you'll fill your cards quickly.:):) Have fun!

I have been carrying around various variants of the Vosonic XSDrive for some time now, however with the current memory costs I am moving away from it to just taking my 6GB of flash.
I am going on holiday for a week later this year a do not intend to take the XS Drive, instead getting a 8GB CF card to add to the collection prior to that should suffice.
The XS Drive is turning out to be too slow, it takes 10 minutes to do a 1 GB card (including verify), which was (not sure if it still is) considered to be quick, a 4GB card takes 4 time that. Not sure if anyone has used these drives but you can't really 'set and forget' them, if you are downloading you really need to be keeping an eye on it to make sure it completed and then selecting verify before it auto powers down.
My 10c (they have discontinued 1, 2 and 5 cent coins here) is get a pile of flash, it is also less likely to crash!

It'll vary for everyone based on how much they shoot and the body they shoot with, not to mention the quality settings...
I shoot a 1D2N using the RAW format. I'll typically fill a 4GB card and potentially start using the second one I keep onhand in a day.
If I'm travelling, I bring the laptop and at the end of each day, dump the card(s).
