jasonco a word of caution about online contests, read the fine print. I have seen some contests where by entering you grant the contest holder the rights for unlimited use of your photo.
Now let me give you a scenario......you enter a photo of a guy and a girl sitting on a bench with a beautiful sunset in the background. You win, great and for a prize you get a nice plaque of the photo and a brass plate announcing "First Place Such and Such Photo Contest 2004".
Move ahead three years, the guy and girl are no longer together, both are married to someone else. One day somebody sees the picture on a greeting card and mails it to one of them. Guess what? Yep, lawsuit coming. Named as defendants are Such And Such Photo Contest Holders, HalfMark Greeting Card Company and yes, good ol' jasonco. Make sure you have a signed release but, most of all make sure you read the fine print. I am betting a dollar to a donut, a contest which retains useage rights will not pay you one dime for any photo they are able to sell but, you will still be named in any lawsuit which arises out of useage of that photo.
Just read the fine print and never, ever give any rights away. They can use it for their contest but not anything else.

...the other question is what is it that you want to gain by entering a contest? Money? Fame? Experience? Assessing your ability against the world? I would answer this one first.
Many sites have contests for their members only, with rewards from simply being declared the winner to subscriptions or products native to the site. Some are simple fun and for improving skills, whereas others might be a scam of some sort, as Jeff points out. Don't be naive.
Do a Google search photo contest, photo competition, etc.
