IMHO, You are right and wrong Austincabot, The G series is already a great P&S camera since 7 years ago.
But the DoF can never be controlled with the G7, well, it a P&S anyway, can't compare it with an SLR.
I like my new toy....
Very nice Flickr photos btw, austincabot!

If you've owned previous G versions how would you compare the current "7" against the previous models?
Thanks.

Hi Pmc.
Yes i own the G1 and the G7.
As you may know the technical specs between the G series already? i really was trying hard to think of how to answer your question......
What i like about the G7 is the operating speed (not talking about shutter lag). the control bottons layout and the user interface.
And, the look of it, it looks very nice!
No RAW is so stupid though.

Why can't you controll the DOF with G7 ? it has Av/Tv and M controls just like a dSLR has/Right?. Granted the sensor size is quite different, but DOF is adjustable. I have the S3 and I am able to get a nice thin DOF. Not a creamy as a 5k L lens. But it will do.
Check this...taken with a Canon S3. Is that good nuff of a DOF for a P&S...?

Great shot. You must also take into account of how far the background is from the subject.

So is you not the camera...:) how about this one...the green leafs are not that far. To creat a DOF use the largest aperture your camera allows. The S3 using the tele is 3.5. Then zoom to fill the frame to your taste and triggerr the shot.

Hi Silvex,
I must confess that there's something not so clear in my original post and maybe that makes you totally get me wrong.
I should say:
"the DoF effect created from a G7 can never be compared with an SLR equip with a fast lens."
instead of,
"But the DoF can never be controlled with the G7, well, it a P&S anyway, can't compare it with an SLR."
(i think my over emphasis sentence makes you mis-unstandstanded.)
And i agreed with Austincabot that "You must also take into account of how far the background is from the subject". That is what excatly happening in the 1st "bird" picture.
Try shooting excatly the same flower picture that you've posted again, with an SLR and a fast lens and you might also have the same feeling that makes me say "DoF can never be controlled with the G7".
Thanks for the link, here's some links that i would like to share too,

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/Canon-G7.shtml
(I bought my G7 after i read the review from the above)
and i would also like to share this link too, very encouraging for me to use my P&S with heart. (well, yeah, 65 years later i can shoot photos like him i believe.)

All agree, also the DOF it is part of your composition. So you must take into accout what behind the subject and how far is it. Either way I am no pro and still learning every moment. The best suggestion...practice and make the best of the G7 capabilites. That is waht I did with mine S3. Now I think I have a pretty goog handle on zooming and controlling exposure. My next step, macro photography.
And like I said. There is no way a G7, S3 or even the old Pro1 are going to compete witha 1Ds Mkii with a 400mmF2.8L IS ...no way!.

I guess this is what I was talking about: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/155/419223583_7d1c83558d.jpg
It was shot a f/8, but you can clearly see the difference between the barn and the trees behind. The trees are even more out of focus than the barn because they are farther away.

try F2.8 and post the results...with F2.8 and focusing on the post and branches at the front. Everything will be blurred -- aka bokeh. I also assume your are shotting with Av mode.

No, its Manual Exposure. I understand where you're coming from. With a larger aperture, the DOF is less, therefore with the G7 you can control DOF. I was just posting mine as an example that not matter what aperture you use, things farther away will be more blurred than things closer.
