I just purchased this lens EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM. But it came with no hood, is there a certain kind I should get or are they all the same.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge, I am fairly new to photography.

You want the EW 83J hood. :)

Canon makes a hood specifically for this lens...EW-83J.

ok and now I will ask the question that will make me look really stupid. When do you use the hood? Day time shooting, night time shooting, all the time.

Like I said a lot of this is all new to me.

Thanks!

You should use it all the time. It helps eliminate flare and will protect your lens in case you bump into something while holding it.

The only time I would not use the hood is when I was using a polarizer or graduated filter that needed to be turned or positioned on the lens. Sometimes I will not take time to put the hood on if I just grab the camera out of the bag for a quick shot too.
