After several months of research, I've found the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 Di XR to replace my 300D kit lens. I went to a shop yesterday and actually put one on my hands, it was small and feels very nice.......
...
.....
Then I gave it back to the shop owner and said "let me think about it."
It was the right lens for me but I seriously struggled because I thought I should not spend so much money on my hobby. The 300D was already a huge investment for me, and I gotta stop myself from buying lenses.

I should not spend too much money on my hobby because there are other important things worth saving money for.

Perhaps I'm not mature enough, I still keep checking out lens reviews and camera shops.

Like what? I can't think of a single thing.
Certainly not food. If you look hungry enough, people will eventually give you something to eat, but nobody's giving away photo equipment.

The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is a very nice lens, but if you're feeling that you're spending too much money on this hobby, then maybe you should just leave the kit lens ? From what I've read the 18-55 is very nice lens - why aren't you happy with it ?

Young man you ar not alone. I am fifty and sill get the bug, like right now, that I just have to have someting new. You will never have it all and will always want more. You can justify the need 10 fold. But in the end it is just a want. I started out this week looking at a macro lens and am now looking at trading off my camera for a diffferent camera and a flash which means I would have two flashes and of course that means I have to have an STE-2 tansmitter. It is endless. If you are concerned about the money then don't spend it. To be content wth what you have will get you through untill you are comfy to drop some bucks. And for goodess sake stay out of the shops, you wil just tease yourself into buying something that three months later you find you don't need. good luck, and welcome to a healthy addiction.

Are you under the delusion that only you do that? I have some sad news for you. You are only in the first step of a lifelong addiction! Check out this thread:

This is my suggestion, go out and buy the lens. If you feel ok about it after then fine. If you don't, take it back.

Shame on you. If there was a sin bin here you would be paying into it!
BTW, that lens is a fantastic lens, you just wait till you get the L bug mate. ;)

You lenses will be what makes the 300D the camera you want it to be. And the Tamron 28-75 is a damn fine lens for not a lot of money!

I should not spend too much money on my hobby because there are other important things worth saving money for.

You hobby is what you enjoy, what completes the rest of your life, and in many cases can help define you. Don't skimp on it.

Get the lens, if you don't how many shots will you think i winder how that would have turned out with ....
Are you sure the kit lens is OK....?

Well, some people spend their cash (or other people's!) on drugs as a 'hobby'

At least you'd have something to show for it by getting that lens.

You could keep an eye on Ebay to see if a good deal crops up.... you could even part-ex your kit lens or sell it so that you wouldn't feel so bad..

ooops. It was discouragement you were looking for wasn't it?

Somebody stop you? I think the only reason I'd try and stop you buying some kit is if it was the last thing in the store and I wanted it too! Stop you? Who's gonna stop me?

Yes the 18-55 is a nice lens for its price. However because I do a lot of low-light photography I would like to have a faster lens. And I would love to have shallow DOF all the time too. I found myself swapping between the kits lens and the 50mm f1.8 way too often, and I want one lens to rule them all.

This is my suggestion, go out and buy the lens. If you feel ok about it after then fine. If you don't, take it back.

Too bad there is no such thing as "customer service" where I live. :?

You hobby is what you enjoy, what completes the rest of your life, and in many cases can help define you.

Yeah that's how I convinced myself to buy the G3, and the 300D just a few months later. I just think I should convince myself to stop at some point.

Sounds like I should stay away from this forum too! (but I just... I just... can't!)

cloudless, these people will *not* help you save money. they will also *not* let you be content with picture-taking. it's like having 50 money-spending little devils perched on your left shoulder whispering in your ear, and not 1 little angel on your right shoulder. unless you count your wife.

no offense...

For low light photography, the aperture is never large enough :!: (I've never used a f/1.0 lens.) And you will still swap the Tamron f/2.8 lens to EF50/1.8 for low light photography.

But DOF is a good reason to get the f/2.8 lens.

If you can stand with f/3.5-4.5, you may get a used EF28-105/3.5-4.5 at good price. Leave the narrow DOF shots to 50mm prime.

Hey, don't check lens review anymore...
