I would say "style" but I think that it actually "depends" then my definitive answer is:
"I don't know" or, in a word, :?:

To me, this question is impossible to answer in one word unless that word is "depends". Sometimes the subject would be an OK subject, but the picture is actually "made" by the quality of the lighting or some effect cause by the lighting. Sometimes the subject is boring but the picture is "made" by the composition and sometimes that composition is bad, but the subject saves the photo. Sometimes an accidental blurring or incorrect exposure "makes" the photo. So, there is (IMHO) no one thing that makes a great photo, it has to be a combination of things.

Man, that's the longest one-word answer in history! I'm the most long-winded guy in this forum and still I was able to hold my one-word anwer to three words.

OK OK, "imagination"

OK, I've got it......the one word, without which you would not ever take a photo........... and it is closely related to the fact that, in order to take that great photo, you do need to press the shutter button. Although this word is no guarantee of a great picture it is essential that it is included in order that you are in with a chance............
