My studio lighting

Hi all, this is the lighting setup I currently have. I bought for online school coarse I was taking. Don't use much, but am looking into doing more indoor photography. I see and read alot about the alien bees.
Can anyone tell me if the lights I have are good or if they recommend the alien bees.
I know the lights I have are very hot, but I don't know what the difference is between my light set and the bees.

Brittany,
Your set is continuous lights. Yes, they produce a lot of heat.

AlienBees are studio strobe (flash) units. Lots more light for photographs, lots less heat, and significantly higher cost.

Strobes produce a very large amount of light in an incredibly short length of time. This allows lower ISO settings, smaller apertures for more DOF, and faster shutter speeds than continuous lights. The flash freezes motion which is important when shooting energetic todlers and allows you to shoot without a tripod.

I have used such light borrowed from a friend. They get really hot and get ready to replace the bulbs very regularly, in fact if you move them when on or JUST after turning them off theres a 85% chance they will burn out.

Now, AB's - probably one of the best solutions for someone starting out and yes more money BUT a tin less for similar equipmnet from bigger renowned brands.

There are many Pro's who shoot with AB's as there are amateurs.

With the Smith Victors you are very limited on use and sooner or later you WILL wnat strobes/monolights and you are going through exactly what I did and here i am tody with only one AB800 and looking to buy another within a month or so :)
