I know for a lot of you, street photography is taking the picture without asking. But for the times that you do ask, what was your approach? And if they have a question like "why do you want to take my picture?", or "what are you going to do with the photograph?", or if they ask you "what paper or company are you shooting for?" What were some of your responses? I mean especially if you don't work for a newspaper, or any other company that has photographers? Sorry for another long winded question. :D

Thanks so much

I am just out shooting and thought you would make an interesting subject. I won't shoot any if you don't want me to.
This is usually followed up by them saying, no thats ok shoot away.

If I get something I think will be usable, I will submit it to any number of magazines or news wire services. May even offer it to a stock company where it could be used in an advertising medium. If it should be used, by filling out a model release I will contact you and see about getting a copy of what it was used for mailed to you.
I let them know that if they sign a release it may be used. Without it, not a chance. I never mention the word sell, as that makes them think your making money off them.

I simply say, I am not working for anyone, I freelance. If I get something I think the Star (local paper) will want I will send it in.
