Rectangular markings when shooting--A70

I set up my A70 for center focussing (at least I think I did). When I snap the photo, two rectangular areas are indicated. What are these markings for?

It sounds like your camera is set up for fully automatic focusing and those rectangles are indicating the areas the camera picked for setting the focus.

The camera is set for autofocus. I don't like manual focus but would like to control where the focus is set. I thought I set it up for central spot focussing. Maybe it was spot metering I set it for. What are the options?

Your AiAf is turned "On."
Go to Menu, AiAF, select "Off," hit the Menu button again to close out the view.
