On www.dpreview.com a user started a poll about who has had problems with their 300D camera, but the problem with that forum is the lack of voting capabilities and a limit of 150 posts per thread so I thought I would create a poll here with the same question.

This is the original post from http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1031&message=8450194

I made this poll to let us be able to know some real numbers about 300d´s failures vs. the no prob. ones

Just put your message (with opinion or blank) in the thread where it belongs.

Please keep the numbers real; don’t put more than 1 message and don’t use it for discussion ( I’m not trying to tell you what to do, but I think this will help us all)

I’m not trying troll with the 300D, and would really like to see several hundreds good ratings vs. 4 or 5 failures.

KEEP THE POLL IN THE FIRST PAGE, UNTIL THE NUMBERS ARE FAT.

Not one problem with the Drebel except for dead pixels, which is a given considering over 6 million of them.

But, did have my 28-135 IS go crazy the first week i had it.

Funny too because the sales rep old me that after 7 dead pixels it was covered under warranty.

I had a faulty one, hence my vote. No problems with the replacement.

Mine has been fine for the short time (3 weeks) I've had it. Very happy with it, and in fact I just ordered another one on behalf of my Father-in-law!

I've had mine since January of this year, and I've taken two or three
hundred photos with it, I would guess. So far, so good. No problems at
all that I can discern. Within a week I'll be using my Rebel to shoot with
an EF 100-400 L IS and hope I have as much success with that lens as I have
with the kit lens. I bought my camera new from a reputable retailer.
Boy, would I love to have a 1Ds.

Hey, FJC! Those are my initials, too!

300D: Had it about 3 months. Despite being a 40-year 'film guy', I like it very much with the exception that I'm less & less impressed with the AF function.

I received my just before Christmas and have had no problems (except which accessories to buy next!) with my Rebel. 1344 pictures so far.

I have had zero problems other than buying more and more stuff. I have shot over 4000 pictures including two weddings, and numerous photo shoots.

Incredible piece of equipment. Maybe I shouldn't gave switched considering that the D70 came out. But I still think that the Canon glass is better than my nikon stuff. I will have my first L later this month and be ready for my first big trip with digital.

Anyway. I have fallen in love with the 300D and can only wait to upgrade to the Mark as soon as my home business gets off the ground.

I've had it since the end of March and I have already taken over 1,000 pictures. What's wrong with me??? ;)
Anyway, I'm extremelly happy with my DRebel:)

I got 2 dead pixels, on the LCD, but not on the sensor/picture yet. Funny tho because, a single dead pixel on my pictures taken with my G3, is what allowed me to return the G3 after a year on the service plan exchange, and pay an additional 300$ to upgrade to the digital rebel.

Dead pixels on the LCD can be annoying, especially with a point and shoot digicam like the G3 which has a horrible viewfinder.
I went thru 2 S30's, and 3 G3's before finding one without a dead LCD pixel. The people at the store hated me!

My Rebel has no dead LCD pixels though :)
There is one hot pixel on the sensor that sometimes shows up at speeds slower than 1/20 sec., but on a cmos sensor with 6 million pixels, this is very common, and not at all noticeable unless you know where it is and zoom in 200%.

ditto. 7000 pictures since October... no problems whatsoever.. Cept' I did have a scare. I was in a very warm humid climate.. and I took a shot and it was VERY blurred. I locked up the mirror for a sensor clean to see what was up.. and the sensor was fogged over.. to my relief.. :)

Not one single problem that wasn't caused by me  With over 2000 pictures taken since January.

I bought a service plan with mine, and after 6 months and 5500 pix, it broke. It was replaced under the service plan.

No lense would lock on, and it wouldn't take a picture. This happened once before, but after trying about a dozen times, it started working again. The second time, no luck getting the lense to lock on. No trouble with the new camera, about 2 weeks old now, with only a 100 or so pics on it.

I have had mine for a month now (wow has it been that long?) and aside from one little dead pixel on the LCD, which really isn't that big of a deal, mine has worked wonderfully. All the problems I have had with it have been user error

800+ pics so far and far too many to go

I just joined after reading these posts for the past few weeks, and wanted to say that this is one of the best forums that I've seen, lots of members helping and answering questions for each other.

I just upgraded to the DRebel from a Rebel2000 that I've had for years, and have had no problems with it so far. (Ok, so I'm actually loving it!) I did recieve my first error code (Error05) last weekend while camping in WI with it, but noticed what the problem was. A clump of dirt had gotten stuck in the flash so it was blocking it from popping up. (Wet weather shooting in a cave at Maquoketa Caves State Park. To wet to do much shooting, but I did get a little.)

Everything on my 300D works perfectly.

except... I have one blown pixel. I have to remember to check that area during post processing to "heal" it out.

Its only rarely noticeable.

Mine works and has performed well since I bought it in March. No dead pixels either, that I can see. No regrets whatsoever. :)

Sent mine away to Canon last Monday (17th) for repair.
Flash pops up when battery inserted, no comunication with lens, 01 and 99 messages.
Be interesting to see what Canon has to say.
Purchased last September with no problems at all until now, just gone on the blink for no reason.
I think I'm just unlucky.
Two year guarantee with digital-cameras.com :)

I just love the images from the 300D and mine has been working superbly before and after the rather unfortunate accident, I found out that the camera is VERY fragile after I dropped the camera from a height of 12 inches onto a carpeted floor and demolished a brand new 50mm f1.8 lens. It took six weeks to fix  . Talk about serious withdrawl.

So does this repair count for the poll?

Cheers

I bought mine 9/03. About a month ago I got an Error 99. Then two weekends ago the shutter outright broke. One leaf of it was sticking out. I sent it in for repair and it's due back either tomorrow or the following day.

I had about 2,800 exposures on the camera when it broke.

the shutter of my girlfriends 300D was removed. Since then, no problems. So it was repaired once.

I hate to say this because now it will probably crash almost immediately but my Drebel, purchased last fall, has been perfect. No problems at all. Now some of the pictures haven't been perfect but for that I would have to have the photographer repaired and Canon Service refuses to accept that sort of return!

I've been watching that topic in DPReview. I've also done some Googling for shutter or mirror failures of the 300D. Interestingly, the only significant source of such problems is DPReview itself.

I'm not conjuring up some conspiracy theory, or that anything is particularly wrong with DPReview--but I think that the lack of web-wide reporting suggests that it's not the problem that it appears to be if someone is using DPReview as his sole source of info.

Looking at some of their complaints, my current theory is that there is some unpredicatable user error occuring. There was one respondent, for instance, who claimed to be on his 4th 300D body--the previous ones all having died early from locked shutters. I'm convinced that guy is doing something consistently wrong.

My suspicion is that people are doing something wrong in the sensor cleaning procedure (that being the only time users come into close contact with the shutter). I suspect that strong puffs of a bulb blower may distort the delicate retracted shutter blades as a person attempts to blow dust off the sensor. Users should take caution not to direct air toward the top or bottom of the sensor opening.

I could be wrong, but I think it's a prudent precaution.

I've dropped mine on to concrete/stone 3 times now (yes, I know) - once with a Sigma 100-300 f4 EX + TC on it from about a foot, sorry 30cm and once from nearer 100cm with the kit lens.

Other than the battery access door coming apart (easily repaired with superglue) no problem.

There was much discussion initially about lack of 'robusticity' (I just invented that I think) but my experience suggests it is not too bad.

Now to summon up the courage to go for the ISO 3200 ahem, amendment

I've had mine since November and taken over 4000 shots with no major issues. I did have the camera lock up with my 70-200 2.8 L the other day. Couldn't get it to do anything until I removed the lens and turned the camera off. Only did it once and it hasn't done it since.
