View Full Version : Not a straight face...

I was shooting two wedding portraits yesterday, as we're often asked to just do an hour shoot and then the bride and groom goes on with their day after that. Yesterday I had two 1 hour shoots about 70 km outside my hometown. This first ocuple is the ones that really captured my heart, as they were full of mischief and fun. The girl was 7 months pregnant and they decided to get married now, before the baby was born. So in 4 weeks they had planned everything (booked me 2 weeks ago!).
Here's a more serious portrait of them, as they wanted something to show grandma and grandpa, the belly of course part of the wedding in many ways.

Then the fun began, we shot some serious photo's of course, both of the bride and groom as well as their small wedding party. But after the serious stuff done, the bride says "Lets do some funny faces". Well, who could resist?!

Inspired by that I said "Why don't your wedding party jump up in the air while you stand still and look serious?" Well that was well recieved, but I can't say that anyone of us could look serious - we were laughing so hard we almost pee'd ourselves!

And well, this image was supposed to be "artistic", but we were all in such a goofy mood it looks just silly. We have a lot of silly photo's from this day, but I'm going to leave you with this last one... Now, tell me if you could keep a straight face looking at these images? :D

Thanks kids!! Yeah I sure wish every couple was like this too! I love it when they say "we want playful and fun images - as we want photo's for our sake, not for granny". :D

A while back I took a 'designing wedding photography' course. The instructor asked each of us to give one word that we would like our clients to use to describe us/our photos. Most people said 'Beautiful' or 'Stunning' etc. I said 'Fun'...and this is exactly what I had in mind.

Excellent job! Love the colors of the background in #2 and 4! It just goes with their personalities (fun and colorful ;)) I'd prefer to have #3 in color. It's a fun shot, the color bring life to it and the jumping people are better positioned than #4. #5 is just hilarious! :D

Perfect.
If that's not a couple in love, then I don't know who is. Great to see that come across in the shots.

Big Mike, yeah that really is how I feel too. It's one of the most happy days in our lives, our wedding day. So it should be filled with laughter and fun! Beautiful sort of comes with the territory already!
Kevin, exactly that feeling is what I got too. I want to be friends with these people!
tim, thank you! Not sure if there's any secrets. I press that little button on the right when the camera says it's in focus..... oh, and then in Photoshop I run Kevin Kubota's Daily Multi-vitamin. :D
Sebastien, I think I'll make it in color instead... I did edit the color image first, then I saw that image and knew it was better, but I wanted to see it in bw as well. So in the end I'll probably switch them around!
Pete, my exact thoughts too! The other portrait shoot was a completely different story. I don't doubt they were in love as well, but they don't ooze it out, like this couple do.

Ladies and Gentlemen -
Petra ... Hall!!!
Thanks for sharing Petra - hey and for all those contemplating a 350D upgrade to 400D - or, 20D - or, 30D ...... perhaps a 2nd 350D might be in order instead ;) Nice work Petra! Sam

LOL Sam!! I have to do with what I have.... but I doubt the result would be better with a 30D (even if I want one or two).

Robert, oh yeah! I have a huge series of images and in all of them he managed to stay in the air with the most silly leg movements. :D
I also have other shots I haven't edited yet, where he's goofing off even more. This guy loves to have his photo taken and I overheard the bride say that he and his girlfriend should get married soon too. I hope they hire me then!!

Petra, I just saw your website and all I can say is..."WOW"...your photos are simply gorgeous! Do you use any special actions for pp or just a simple curves adjustment? The subjects seem to pop out beautifully from your photos. Love 'em!:)

Thanks guys!!
Gareth, yeah I think the 350D is not so bad after all, especially paried with good lense. It has a few quirks, but it's a camera, and if I aim it the right direction it usually comes out fairly ok. :D
